Default Venice Opening Day

Made a quick trip down river to see how the camp and marsh made out after the storm. Got a late start Friday so we didn't get to do a whole lot of scouting, but the little we saw looked like the marsh made out OK. Headed to the double top secret spot Saturday morning only to have a couple boats cut us off from where we wanted to set up. Improvised a little and we were setup in a makeshift blind for sun up. Not a whole lot of ducks in the area, but we seemed to be in a good area and made our opportunities count. Had a 3 man limit by about 8:30 with a little of everything. Mostly greys, pintail, and a couple teal and red heads. Heard a bunch of widgeon but never saw any. From all the reports we heard, it sounded pretty slow everywhere else, and we didn't hear of many other limits. Looks like it's going to take come colder weather to get 'em down here. Anyhow, grabbed a bite for lunch at the camp and then put about 50 really nice trout in the boat before heading back up river. All in all, not a bad opener. Now let's hope the birds and wahoo start to show up in numbers...

Ben,is there any open land to hunt down there? My lease is shot even before the season open. Dan Mississippi river flood it and the water will hold in it till next year. I don't think ducks like 20' of water.

I did get a report from Reggio. My brother only shot 6 teal. He said that there were no big ducks, but alot of shots were hear from the back of the island.

Nice going Ben. I talked to one buddy who hunted Pointe Aux Chene WMA. They shot at one duck. That was it! Glad I went buy a boat instead!

Paul,

There's plenty of open land down there. Everything we hunt is public. We hunt out of Go Devils, but there are plenty of areas you can get to in pirogues. Any time you're down there, I'd be more than happy to show you some things on a map or show you around.

Gary,

That's the same story I'm hearing everywhere. Congrats on the new boat! Any details???

Ben,

Don't want to derail your thread, but I bought a 2002 215 Kencraft CC. It's still in NC. I need to go back and get it. Here's a couple of pics:

Congrats! She's a beauty. Looks brand new. Bring her down to Venice some time...
