Did anybody read the piece written by James H Cowan, Jr of LSU in Saltwater Sportsman? Reads like BS to me. I just dont understand. I have never in my life caught the amount of red snapper as in the last couple of years. I have also never caught red snapper in such shallow water as the last couple of years. It's amazing to watch the freaking red snapper devour chum before mangroves can get it.
It's not just here people, it's the whole country!
NMFS = no more fishing season!!!
Believe it.
We have had limitied entry / moratorium for charter boats in the Gulf for a long time now, limits are cut back every year . . . based on phone surveys? WTF?
I have never had a phone survey, and I don't know anyone that has???
I have seen more schools of redsnapper the past two summers than ever before. It's a shame to leave a rig in 54 ft. of water because the red snapper get to the bait before the mangrove can. Catch and release 20 red snapper to catch a 5 mangrove. This happened twice this summer 7-11 miles off Grand Island!!
This is so irritating. I fished all summer in 50' or less launching from Gulfport, MS and always was able to come home with a decent box of red snapper with minimal effort. Sure you can go after mangroves and grouper, but you have to catch a ton of red snapper (and often redfish) to get to them. This is such BS. Most of the red snapper we caught were hooked freelining bait behind the boat.
We fished local Cobia Tournaments when snapper were not in season and ended up having to release some monsters.
Are they cutting back on commercial quotas? Do the commercial guys ever get regulated down? Or is it what you always hear...they have the money and the power and the lobby effort to keep things in their favor.
Well, GOVERNMENT control at its best. Sure, red snapper has been over fished, but the commerical guys catch a lot more than we recreational guys. On the opening weekend of snapper season, there were probably 100 boat trailers at Ft. Morgan launch. 100 boats, x 3 per boat, x 2 snapper, = 600 fish. X 5 lbs,= 3000 lbs. Sure that is at one launch, one day, but it was the most busiest day of snapper season. A month later I saw 10 trailers at the launch. Did every boat catch their limit ? no,,Was every boat snapper fishing ? no,,,It is no secret, hotter it gets thru the summer, the deeper the snapper get. Some of us just do not have a boat big enough or feel comfortable enough to go out 15+ miles. So the numbers are over estimated. The NMFS probably estimates it by the # of boats, # of fishing licenses issued, and that everyone caught 2 snapper every week during the season. Lets see, this year, I kept 4, my son kept 7. Total of 11 snapper. 2 licenses, 1 offshore boat. That is probably lower end of normal, but it is normal. Not 30-10 pounders per person.

I'm sure that is just a joke, but I hope nobody takes that seriously. It pisses me off when I hear about people filleting fish to catch more than their limit. I have heard several people brag about doing it this past year. It f'cks up the fishing for everybody, so I hope these people get caught and fined out the @ss.
