OK, we rec's caught ESTIMATED 4 million lbs, lets see, that is 4 million, divided by 3 pound fish average= 1,333,333 fish caught. (average is 2-4 pounds)Divided by 70 day snapper season, = 19,048 fish caught per day, 7 days per week. Divided by 2 = 9524 fisherman catching 2 snapper every day. Divided by 3 people per boat= 3174 boats fishing 7 days per week.
OK, according to MRFSS there are 180 charter boats in Alabama, 1381 charter boats in Florida, In Alabama 29 are multi passenger. Just for fun, 1381 + 180= 1561 boats. X 6 people per boat, = 9366 fisherman that could be out on any given day on a charter. As you see above, that is close for # of fisherman. IF 100% of all charters run 7 days per week with 6 people & limit on snapper it would add up. But we all know that all charters do not run every day, some do not snapper fish, any ideas ?

How is that "CHANGE" working for you. We had all better do more than just complaining on a forum. Have you called or written your congressman today? I have. Complanency is why we are where we are.

I dare any official to come on my boat and NOT catch a boatload of snapper in any of my spots off Mexico Beach Fl more than 10 miles offshore. I Last april I caught an nice 18 pounder 5 ft under the boat with a butterfly jig on my first drop with no chum and the engines were still running. Later that day I was trolling in for Kings and caught a 10 pounder on a duster with a frozen cigar minnow. I caught no grouper that day because of all the snapper.

I have to respond on the catch, fillet and release. I, personally, call it civil disobedience. The country is the peoples country and although I do not condone anarchy I do feel that our country, as we know it, is being stolen from us by politicians elected to represent us. If the congress and the senate go on the same retirement and health care plan I'm on then I will follow them, if they want to vote their crap in that benefits their own interest in late night sessions then I'm going to live my life in the pursuit of happiness as stated in the constitution. If that means spending my hard earned money to buy a boat, gear and gas to keep a few fish then so be it. I hope the sheeple that submit to the government being all knowing wake up and get a dose of reality before your rights and privileges fly out the window for good. I am not foolish enough to think one can just go out and cart blanch do as they please but common sense has to play a part in personal responsibility. The government thinks they know what's best for you and YOUR family...what do you think? The Hun

Word has it LA is seriously considering renewing their 3 mile limit.
With 180+ ft of water within 3 mi off of S/SW passes ... no problem with Snaps/AJ's.

Compete with Texas ... and they don't have these depths even at 9 miles.

If they really want to regulate a fishery then regulate the menahaden fleet's by-catch and limit the number of those boats working in a specific area. There isn't a more destructive fishing practice around for juvenile fish than the pogie armada working the gulf. The shrimping fleet consolidation (high gas prices, imports, and aqua farming) have drastically lowered the commercial by-catch in the gulf which should have had a positive effect on our fishery in the N. Gulf.

Of course here is my idea for NMFS--how about they coordinate with the Mineral Management Service (MMS) and require that no offshore fishing rigs be removed in order to help the fishing stocks? I guess that would require cooperation between two government agencies which is illegal in bureaucratic circles.

1 red snapper per person is a ridiculous over reaction. Unfortunately, I see the cobia, tripletail, wahoo, dorado, & blackfin tuna fisheries targeted next.

Post on Rod n Reel.

Rumors of new restrictions to be imposed on the tripletail, croaker, white trout, and mangrove snapper fisheries this year as well.
