Looking to take a trip out of the fourchon in a few weeks, need some advice on where to go offshore. We'll be looking to go at most 35 miles out for our first trip.
Thanks
Dude
now you are getting smart! if i were you, i would target mangroves and cobia. september is a great month for that. basically just start in rigs from 40 ft on out and chum cut pogies and watch. ill give you a shout sometime and give you specifics on rigging and tackle.
Go to Academy and buy a good rig chart. It'll pay for itself many, many times over. Otherwise, it's hard to tell you where to go because block numbers will mean nothing to you. Generally speaking, though, 35 miles out will limit you to mangrove snapper, red snapper, cobia, small amberjack and the occasional grouper. If you're comfortable going 40-45, you'll get into ms. canyon and your options increase with keeper amberjack and more grouper.
I'm completely comfortable that far out, I need to get my wife warmed up before we start throwing big gas money out there. We usually fish the Larose area, it's only 45 minutes away so when we don't do good it's not so bad, at least we can catch a few dozen crabs. We'll see, I'll take a look at Academy
Thanks
Dude
If you go due south out of Belle Pass, you'll pass rigs at 5-7 miles out (ST20's and 50-60 ft), 16 miles out (ST63 and 90 feet), 27 miles out (ST130 and 140+ feet) and then 32 or so miles out (GI90's and 200 feet). GI 90's is just slightly south-southeast, if I recall from ST130.
Dramamine is good, but try Triptone. It is similar to Dramamine, but doesn't make you as drowsy. Do what everybody else said. Get some cut pogies and live croakers and head south from Port Fourchon....and always have a cobia jig ready!
Scopolamine can be compounded into a nasal spray now. It does not need to be put on ahead of time like the patch version of it. It is my understanding that it should be taken at the onset of the symptoms. You will start to feel its effects in about a minute. Scop patches and spray are the way to go, if your wife doesn't have any other conditions that would prevent her from taking it. Ask your physician about it. A little of this stuff goes a long way, but very effective. You're doctor needs to prescribe it and you have to get it from a compounding pharmacy, but it's the way to go.
Like everyone said, head south. There are as many rigs as seagulls. Look around for the lemons. There may be some at many of the rigs. Keep throwing at them till you catch them all. The schools (more like groups) circle the rig and are easy to see.
Bring a pencil and take notes of the locations you stop at for your future trips. The farther out you go the better it gets.

dude,
the raymarine has quite a few rigs already loaded around " the hole ". its where the ms canyon comes up and meets the shelf....ew 305 ( 280 ft), mc 486 ( 500 ft ) etc. those are about 30-40 miles out of belle pass. if the water gets right, you can catch tuna around these in late summer and early fall ( not a ton of tuna there but they do come there sometimes)
great point about the loop...dude, its just south of GI-47L on your GPS...i think its about 15 or so miles wide. you can also go to rodnreel.com and go to the GPS section. its has a great database full or rigs all over. you can plan trips there also
Thanks for all of the advice, It looks like we'll be going soon. I'm hoping that good ole DOW can give me a day off. I just watched a fishing report on the tube, Don Dubuc was tearing up the Mangroves, it looked like he was only a few miles out.
I haven't used the R-65 much, the small GPS is loaded with good spots, I really like the size of the 65 though.
