Default WHEWWWWW, we made it. LOL

Thanks for all the info guys, was a very interesting trip to say the least. Started off at 2 Am and as we came through collins, we got stopped by the police. Seems the taillights that my bud said were hooked up. WEREN'T. They wouldn't hook up, different type of plug and he didn't tell me. AAHHHHH. NEver take his truck again. LOL anyways. We got down there, got 150 live shrimp and headed out to Katrina reef. It was a little choppy but not bad and me knowing they said the wind was gonna die down and the seas get pretty flat, I was feeling good. We fished from the Northwest end of Katrina down to about 2/3's of the was down to the Southeast on the South side and only picked up 1 white trout and a few catfish. OKKKKKKKKK, To heck with this so we eased out towards Horn and then headed what we thought was due West to Ship Island. Word of Advise here, NEVER LET SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT A GPS WATCH IT. Seems the person I had watching my map didn't notice the reciever had fallen on the floor of the boat. UMMMMM, By the time I got worried about us not being at Ship yet and checked, we were half way to the Chandeliers. You'll see on the pics how far we went out. LOL Anyways, we got straightned out and headed back to East Ship where we got out and fished abit. Caught a few cats and missed a few SOMETHINGS. I did have one scare though. I'm deathly afraid of SHARKS and had a 5 footer some within 10 feet of me, scared me to death and I was screaming like a little girl I'm sure. LOL Headed over to West Ship and the fort area where we fished abit and chilled out some. Seas were slick out at Ship Island out of the wind, ABSOLUTLY GORGIOUS. Good time but still no fish to speak of besides a school of lady fish which I got to catch one of my 4 wt flyrod. talk about FUN WOWWWW. Whoever gives out the forcast for the wind and seas, needs to be SHOT. THeir going to get someone killed one day with their forecast. Seas were SUPPOSED to die down to nothing but NOOOOOOO, We were coming back from Ship in what had to be 3 foot seas, talk about a newbie gripping a steering wheel. LOL My hands STILL locked up now. Didn't catch much but the Maiden Voyage was a total blast. We did talk to a few people down at the boat ramp and I know now where to get into some Rat Reds and some trout the next time down. Nice folks we talked to at the ramp and gave us some good advise for
the next trip.

Well you made it back afloat, under your own power with nothing tore up. For a first solo outing that's a success!
You got to spend the day out in God's great creation the way he intended it (more or less). Catching fish is just a bonus.

I'm with you on the weather forcast, We headed out to Horn and the triple rigs sunday and stopped at horn and almost turned around. 1 ft. seas my foot! We did the same thing you did, headed to ship to hang on the beach and it was dead calm on the south side so we anchored next to a shrimp boat and caught a few jacks and sharks. Yeah, I believe it was a bit closer to 3 foot than the forcasted 1 foot. We ended up having a nice long hour ride in at about 15 mph to avoid getting beat to death

Default It did suck on the waves

But to tell you the truth. I was LOVING it. All of it I mean. Not only the beauty of Ship Island but also fighting the waves and learning how to take the bigger one's. I really think it did me good having to fight them and LEARN how to take those biggerr one's. It'll do me alot of good at some point when I GET CAUGHT out there in rough seas now that I have a little expierence with some 3-4 footers. Here are a few more pics that we just got downloaded.

I see in your last pic you are coming in to Biloxi Bay through the channel under the new bridge. In your first post on this subject you said you were launching in Gulfport because it was closer. Where did you wind up putting over? I have fished Katrina Reef several times and never caught a thing, nothing. Guess I'm just a lousy fisherman. I used to fish offshore before I got sick and now I just try to fish inshore for specks and reds since I only have an 18' boat now. It can get real bad real quick out there in the Mississippi Sound so be careful out there, Don.

Default Ended up under the Washington street bridge becasue

I knew there was a baitshop there. Really wasn't THAT BAD out there but I did learn that you never listen to the weatherman about wave height and how much wind. LOL. Kinda glas we put in there cause as we were putting the boat up we got to talking to a older couple and they were telling us several places to try out if we wanted to catch a bunch of rat reds and specks. Why do they call themn RAT REDS? ain't figgered that one out yet

I don't know the answer to that question, I've just heard them called that since I moved down here in the mid 70's, from Jackson MS. Even back in those days we used to make jokes about the NWS marine forecast. We'd be out in the Gulf in 3' - 4' seas and they'd be on the VHF weather channel saying it would be 1' - 2' seas with 5 - 10 mph winds. Our old saying was to take their numbers and add them together for a more accurate picture of what you would encounter! And that's been pretty accurate most of the time.
