The tuna fishing remains red hot! Every day I fished this past week we have stopped tuna fishing with boat limits of two yellowfin per person. I have been catching all my fish on live hardtails which is nice because they are definitely much easier to come by than herring although the last day I fished it seemed as though they were starting to get back on herring. As usual a 7/0 ultra point Mustad circle hook and a 10 foot section of seaguar fluorocarbon has been doing the trick. The red snapper remain a guarantee as well.
This past Wednesday I had my good friend Matt Mayfield who runs Tays B-B-Q in Mississippi(absolutely the best b-b-q I’ve ever had). Matt has been fishing with me for about eight years and we had never hooked a marlin, until Wed that is. First bait in the water got eaten by about a 300# blue marlin and the air show was on. We never did get a hand on the bill but we fought it for a little over an hour and got it real close several times. After our marlin encounter we got on the tuna real good the only problem is porpoises would take 2 out of every 3 baits we let out. We started with about 20 baits caught 6 tuna and the porpoise took the rest. We finished the day with a nice limit of red snapper.

Thursday I had Phil Ezell who always seems to time his trips just right and this was his best ever. We went right back to the porpoise hole and thankfully they were gone, but the tuna were still there and they were snapping. I don’t think we ever had a bait in the water for 5 minutes before it got eaten. Doubles and triples were the norm. We quit tuna fishing by 10 AM with a full box and the biggest going 110#.

Friday I had Court Bradford and it was a repeat of Thursday except we lost our big fish of the day. I didn’t ever see the fish but I’m quite certain it was well over 100#.

Saturday I had the pleasure of taking my wife and kids snapper fishing and although the little one got sick I think everyone still had fun and it was a great relaxing day.

Sunday I took Terry Gross, he wanted to take a ride on the Freeman so he figured he would make a trip out of it and stumbled into possibly the hottest tuna bite I’ve ever seen it the 11 plus years I’ve been doing this. In a matter of forty minutes we singled, tripled, tripled, and doubled without missing a single one.

Monday I had Craig Hebert and I actually had to fish for them. We had to fish until almost 2 to catch our limit. I had gotten used to only fishing one spot and being done by 10:30 but we still got it done. It did seem that if I had had herring instead of hardtails it would have been easier.

As you can see the tuna fishing out of Venice is as good as it gets. The best part about it is all these fish were caught on day trips, no need to spend the night out there. I don’t know about you but I certainly prefer a good dinner, some ac, and my bed once the sun goes down. To get in on the action give us a call.
