They guy I fish with loves em. He's a registered user on here maybe he can share some recipes. They guys who taught me how smoke mullet on Dauphin Island love to eat spades too. If it's fresh and you can fry it or smoke it I don't think it could be that bad?
My brother eats raw bonita! I tried a piece of that once and it really sucked. One of the nastiest things I've ever put in my mouth.

I have ate a few that we caught on accident. Not too bad but not a lot of meat on them and a kind of a pain to filet. As for all those people who eat mullet no thanks. Cut one up that comes out of the water over here and you can see the grit in the meat.

If you've read some of my other posts, you know there's not much I won't eat. I have actually never tried a spadefish. I do however think that there are different kinds of mullet. I'm no expert here for sure. The ones that folks eat in Ga or Fla must not be the same ones we have here. When you cut one of these up the meat is very mushy. It doesn't smell very good either. I'm sure someone will come up with the latin names shortly and set this straight. I'm looking forward to learning.

I was fishing with a coonass one time & we were scaring up several coots as we were running. I already knew the answer, but I asked him anyway.

Do ya'll eat coots?

"Pretty good in gumbo", he said.

The big mullet are the good ones to eat. I think they are striped mullet. The ones you see on top smoking in the big schools. The smaller ones are blacks. I don't think they get big enough to eat. There is no grit in their meat. Either species. There can be grit in their stomach and "gizard". The species names may not be correct, but that's what I have heard em called. The meat isn't any softer than trout, just keep em well iced and try to cook em the same day. They are great fried fresh. Not much different from trout or redfish.

I think Mullet is one of the best fried fish when you can get them fresh. I love the way they taste. I don't eat them when they were frozen or caught in bays. I like them when they are caught in clean water in the gulf and around barrier islands. I fry them the same day they were swimming around and they are great.

Also, they are the easiest fish to clean. A good fillet knife will glide through them.

I was born and raised in Biloxi and we ate mullet when we could get it, gizzards, roe and all, good stuff. Not a RCA, but we raised to eat anything that we could put on the table.

I moved to BR about 25 years ago and found that the locals really have a low regards for mullet, I think that as someone mentioned earlier there are different species and also has something to do with the bottom, in La it is more mud and the further east you go the sandier (sic) the bottom and this might affect the feed and the meat.

All this gabbin about mullet reminded me that mullet have gizards and they are excellent fried, better than chicken gizards!! The **** asses on here that are putting down fried mullet and spade fish are slap crazy! And what I mean by that is I bet every damn one of em will eat a piece of chicken right??? Well lets put that into perspective here. They wont eat a fish that swims in the gulf and inshore areas but they'll break a leg to suck up a piece of fried chicken, the same chicken that before slaughter woulda chased a magget a mile and will eat its own feces....

Your arguement is irrelevant. It doesn't matter waht the creature ate, it's the taste of it's meat.

Look at what crabs eat. The flavor of their meat is delicious.

Mullet around here taste like mud.

Tim is a displaced **** ass living in Virginia Beach. His first fish of the day was a 12 lb 4 oz Spade fish. He's sold on them now. He use a smallish hook baited with clam and a spitshot sinker about 18" above the hook.

I definitely could put a quartering away shot from 10 yards on that monster with the bow set up. But, I still wouldn't eat 'em.

Heh, I think it has alot to do with what you can catch. If you can regularly catch scamp, gag, flounder, or trigger you can tell the boys they can have those crappy red snapper and red grouper. Those bluefish and bonita taste pretty good if you're used to the stuff they sell at the store.

To me, white perch (sacaliat) is the best tasting fish there is, followed closely by flounder. Pearl River catfish is hard to beat.

I would have to be pretty hungry to eat sailcat, bluefish, or alligator.

So just how many mullet, bluefish, mackeral spadefish or MUD have you eaten? And if the answer is none (which I presume it is) then how can u knock it if you havent tried it? Point taken???Look, to each his own, I dont eat King Mercuries or bluefish but I'll knock the sides of a mullet or a spadefish with the quickness! I just think its funny that almost all of America will belly up to a plate of fried chicken (including myself) but call something else gross due to what they eat or where they roam! Do you eat oysters? I do and love them, but guess what??? They suck in and ingest human feces and every other nasty bacteria and micro organism that we pump into the waters we fish. Eat what you want, my theory is......."IF IT FRIES IT DIES" and we all know you can fry just about anything.....
