Default Camping on Horn Island

I'm going to try an overnighter on Horn Island in the next couple of weeks. What kind of info can you all offer me as far as parking overnight at the OS launch, which end to camp on, etc. I was thinking of camping on the east end and anchoring my boat in that little cove, but I also want to spend time hiking the island. Is either end more crowded than the other on the weekends? Thanks for the info.

For camping you need to register, or at least speak to the ranger, at the station about 1/2 way down the island on the bay side. Sometimes you call just VHF call. Mosquitos will be ruff this time of year, so take lots of deep woods off or pure deet and camp as far away from trees and ponds as possible.

Good luck

Leaving your trailer at OS overnight is not a problem. Park in the lot on the beach that way your vehicle is in a well lit lot that the cops sit in and drive past alot. As far as whether one end of the island is more crowded the answer to that is yes. The west end will be packed on just about every Sunday. Also to consider is like RUDE attitude mentioned is that bugs will be bad around the sea grass and trees and the east end has less of both.

Cool, thanks for the info. I meant to say the cove at the west end, but if the bugs are worse on that end, i'll go east. How about anchoring your boat? I'm assuming the north side is best, but do you anchor out a ways and point your bow north in case the seas pick up at night from the NE, N, or NW?

If your going to be anchored close to the island always keep your stern to the beach and bow to open water. If your anchored away keep a bow anchor down and let it swing.

Lunch will definitely not be quick at Huck's though it is a cool place to sit and drink. Service and food quality can be hit or miss. mostly miss.

Would call the park service before going to Horn to camp. They have the signs up for the birds nesting preventing entry to the island other than the beach edges and maybe the west and east tips.

scuba....if your boat has a T top then it will be a 10-15 minute 3/4 throttle ride...if no T top the its a 5-7 minute ride(you can go under the railroad bridge)...

Scuba,
Try contacting the Biloxi Harbormaster and see if their transient slips will be open at the time you need. I know they keep one or two open just for people like you. You could launch there and leave your truck overnight with no problems. They have somebody on duty all night.

As for calling the Park Service about camping, no need. As long as you don't pass the bird signs on either end it is OK. I was out at the west end a few weeks ago and some friends had camped there where the cove goes way into the island, beach on the Gulf side was only about 75 yards away, no birds sanctuary signs either. Said the bugs weren't that bad and had no problems, never even saw the rangers.

Caution though, the water is very shallow and may become too shallow for larger boats at dead low tide. You would just have to check it out for yourself, and if too shallow, move on down the island and see if you can find a better spot. Problem is Katrina messed up the insides of both Horn and Ship and made very shallow water for over several hundred yards from the beach. Good Luck!

Jim
