Fourchon 7-3/7-4 (Golden Meadow/Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo) Dad and I brought my godchild fishing for the GM/FTR. Plan was to fish Friday afternoon, spend the night fishing and then finish up Saturday AM. Goal was to get Brody on some nice fish and hopefully get him a few fish on the board for the rodeo.
We departed Lockport about 10am Friday morning. Picked up bait from Gail's and got the boat launched with no problems. Plenty people out fishing as expected.
Tried the jetties at Bell Pass first. Bunches of white trout, but that was it. Wind was blowing, but it didn't look too bad out in the gulf. Headed to Bay Marchand. SLOW fishing. Fished 6 rigs and Brody only managed 3 sheephead. Was the slowest fishing I've every experienced at the close in rigs. We used shrimp, squid, pogies, crab, etc and couldn't catch a cold! Frustrated at the slow fishing we decided to try the beach for a while. All Brody was worried about was throwing his cast net. We let him throw and throw and throw and throw..... After that we anchored up on the east side of the jetties to take a break.
Got a call on the VHF from my brother Cody bragging about a cobia he caught. He swung by and showed us on his way to get it weighed. Nice fish. I guessed about 45#.
Looking North it looked as though we might be in for a little rain so we decided to head to the launch just in case. Besides I think Brody likes throwing the cast net more than fishing. I told him he's going to look like Popeye pretty soon from all the throwing of that thing!
After cleaning up a little we headed back to the pass to spend the night. Got setup on the east side and got the lights ready. Unfortunately Brody got seasick so we had to leave. We got setup again in the tank battery canal on the west side of the pass. Threw out a live pinfish and a chunk of mullet. Hooked up to a nice fish on the pinfish. Brody fought it like a pro even making it completely around the boat a couple of times. The dang 30# leader wore through and we lost the fish. I felt really bad, should have known better than only using 30# test. Threw the lines back out and caught several hard heads and gaftops. Next up Brody got a nice shark on the mullet. I was whipped so decided to rest a bit. Brody and Dad fished ALL night catching catfish and sharks on the bull red lines and small trout under the light.
At day break we stowed the lights to finish up the trip giving the jetties one more shot. The wind was howling! Almost felt sorry for all the boats heading offshore for that beating. We caught small white trout every cast for a couple of hours until we got our fill of that. We kept the biggest one Brody caught and released the rest. On our last piece of mullet we finally got a decent fish. Brody landed a drum that went 25# on the boga grip. We boxed the drum to weigh and called it a trip.
We got to the scale just as it opened. A guy there had the largest sting ray I've seen caught by rod and reel. I've seen some 150# speared by divers, but this guy caught it on 40# test in a 14' boat! Impressive. Well Brody had a sheephead (3#), white trout (12oz), drum (25#10oz) and croaker (6oz) to weigh, but non held up. We tried hard, but could not get any good fish for him. But there are no bad fishing trips, just some better than others!
Congrats to my brother Cody who had 2nd place cobia and 3rd place mangrove.
How'd everyone else do?
