This past Thursday and Friday I had Tom Quinn and crew on board and as usual yellowfin tuna were the target. Thursday was one of those days where things just didn’t go right. We ran and looked for bait for a couple of hours and it was not to be found so we settled in for a long run offshore. As we pulled up to the rig I knew right away we had made a bad move by heading out there, the current was absolutely dead and I think you could have actually walked on the barracuda they were so thick. We did manage one tuna bite and thankfully the Mustad 7/0 Ultra Point circle point did its job and a nice 60# yellowfin hit the deck. After an hour with no action we moved on and between rigs got lucky on a nice 40# dolphin in open water.

The current at the next rig wasn’t any better but we did manage another nice yellow and dolphin. It was a long tough day but we still wound up with two yellowfin, two big dolphin, and a limit of snapper.

Thankfully Friday turned out better for us. The bait was still a little squirly but the Mustad sabikis put enough in the well and we headed for the tuna grounds. As is typically the case on Fridays it was quite a boat show but that didn’t stop the tuna from biting. Everyone on the boat caught a tuna and we lost a very small blue after a short fight but the highlight was hooking a sailfish on a popper. Kevin(who also lost the marlin) casted the popper after some tuna and as he was reeling it to the boat I could see a fish following it, he paused it for one split second and the sail piled on it. The hookset was strong and the sail immediately took to the sky but unfortunately it threw the hook. Maybe next time Kevin. We finished the day with a jack and a limit of snapper and headed for the dock.

It has gotten to that time of year when you have got to have the right bait. When you find it a Mustad sabiki will get them in your livewell and a 6/0 to 8/0 Mustad ultra point circle hook on a six to ten foot section of 80# seguar fluorocarbon will finish the deal. Good luck on the water and for your day give us a call.
