New to the area, and I going up to Michigan to retreive my 4 winns U-19 soon. Just thought I'd ask what kind of anchor works good in Lake Ponch'? Thanks!
Myself I use a Danforth with several feet of chain, works good. L. Pontchatrain is around an average of 12' deep with notable exceptions. The tarpon hole off the end of Lake Front Airport runway, and Seabrook. The tarpon hole 60', 80' maybe even a little deeper. Seabrook in some spots 30 to 40' deep, with plenty of current when the tide is moving. I usually buy an anchor atleast one size bigger than I would think I need.
Speaking of Seabrook, you will see everything there, anchors mostly consist of concrete blocks or window wieghts. Lead wieghts, nah most of those guys use sparkplugs with 50# test, spacing between boats, forget about it sometimes 10' or less. Sometimes it's an education just to watch.
Be carefull in L. Pontchatrain, the lake can go from flat calm to washing machine hell in minutes. If you see clouds forming over the lake you better head for the high ground.
Good luck towing the boat, that's one long trip.

Thanks for the reply twentynine. It is going to be a long haul. I'm flying my father in for moral support and company :-) The lake seems very similar to the one I grew up on, except for the color, and probably dosen't have a sand bottom like home either. Just one thing though... where/what is Seabrook?
the bottom of the lake is mostly mud & shell
i swapped my danforth out for a "reef anchor" with grappling tines...i find it holds faster.
at spots under the causeway the bottom is thick shell and i had trouble getting the danforth to bite
re: seabrook...picture sixty boats all in a pile, casting over and into each other, over a 40' hole with a ripping current
it's where the industrial canal enters the lake on the south shore near the airport
not my idea of good times...too many other places to fish
from slidell, lauch at rigolets marina, and you've got the bridges, lake borgne, lake catherine, and the biloxi marsh all at your disposal

Yikes! (note to self, stay away from seabrook!) Of course, I'm not looking to do any fishing, just some puttering around.
Rigolets is where I was leanin' towards, thanks for the confirmation! Besides it's variety of options at hand, it's the easiest commute. All the junk off of Hwy 11 looks a bit crowded for a trailer newbie like myself.
Yea, seems like a lot of knowledgable locals here, which is great. About now, we could raft off in my neighbor's front yard if y'all are interested. At least the fridge will be closer then
There's the free public launch behind the old train station @ Heritage Park ... great for the non-fisherman because it's some really pretty bayou country right there.* Obey the no-wake zones.
I like my Hooker brand danforth with about 4 feet of chain for the area.
