folks started backing out of the cat island trip, so we rescheduled for later in the month...
hmmmm, a friday off, winds calm, what to do...?
slacker pete needed about three seconds of convincing, and we were off to venice at 3am
anyone ever feel like they're cheating when you keep going back to the same (close)spot, when there's hundreds of other options? past five trips the slacker & i have hit the same set of rigs, 20 mi offshore, 55ft of water, and hammered the fish, so...back to the well
the contestants: yours truly, the aforementioned pete
the vessel: the seapickle (my pacific)
the weapons: (2) amb7000's on 30# rods, (2) amb6500's on 20# rods; 5/0 circle hooks, 50# flouro leader, the chum churn
the ammo: frozen pogies and frozen squid
the arena: 1-2" chop, clear green, nice 10-15mph breeze
first rig, half dozen shakes of the churn, and behind the boat were maybe 50- 75 whopper red & mangrove snapper...it looked like an aquarium
free-lined cut bait to the big ones and chaos erupted
ten nice mangroves (8- 12#), ten red snapper (1 was 22#, rest 6- 10#)
slacker pete broke out the 9wt fly rod, but couldn't get a hook up
a monster jack cravalle finally broke pete's spirit, so we went next door
nothing but bull reds, caught & released a few, then to 41B
almost a re-run of the first rig...huge school of snapper five feet from the boat in the chum
decided we had enough snaps, so pete bottom-dropped while i contemplated jah...
four nice grouper in the box later, headed in
no cobia spotted
total resources used: 18 gal of gas, $50 of bait & ice, nothing broken or lost overboard
pix later in the week when i get the disposable camera developed!
Coming in from Offshore....found the Cobia thick
on some rigs... .160' of water... they ate up fresh
pogies like candy....
Caught a 40# AJ on a spinning rod while throwing
poppers in the middle of the night.... intended target..
TUNA... mr AJ crashed the parade. CRAZIEST thing
I ever did see.
Mixed bag of fish... snappers, cobia, AJ..CONGER EEL....
NO FREAKING tuna.... well at it again next week....
those YF better start cooperating.....
blue don't feel bad...
we went over to cypress cove to eat before heading home
the tuna fleet came in as we were leaving
seven boats, not a tuna among them
I took the Intrepid trout fishing(not an easy feat) in Slidell on Sat b/c I had to go to a crawfish boil. 3 trout and one flounder, on eblown-out tire, one busted fender, two bent axles, one broken guide bar,and lots of melted rubber on the boat. 45 gallons of feul(boat) 30 gallons truck, $25 bait.
Total cost $768.86/pound One day on water with friends=priceless
Went offshore out of Biloxi last Friday with James Caldwell (Caldwell Custom Fab.) We hit rigs all the way out to about 45 miles. Water was real nice, we caught lots of Red Snappers, but all were undersized. We couldn't seem to find where the big ones lived. We had 2 guys in the boat that made 3 dives during the day, but they only saw small snaps as well. We saw a few cobia, but they weren't interested nor were the Mangroves (which we could see tons of from the boat). We really needed some live croakers. Lots of sharks all day.
Went with MakoMyDay on Saturday. I caught 2 Horned Trout (catfish).
At least ya'll were able to get out, even it the fishing wasn't great. Nearly killed me not being able to go with the weather being so nice. Oh well hopefully i'll get my boat back soon!!! ..
We went out of Dauphin Island 20 - 30 miles Monday with 6 people, and got 24 Red Snapper, 9 Gray Triggerfish (3 were 7, 8, and 10 pounds!), 3 Amberjack, and a small King. Total 240 pounds.
Fished just short of the edge, on a 180 out of Pensacola Pass. On the way out, we passed a nuclear sub which appeared to be on the way in to Pensacola. Soon as we anchored, another sub went by after the first. Crazy sight!
Started chumming, two conventional rigs, one 14 wt. flyrod with a full sinking line. Every live bait dropped got immediately slammed, generally by AJ's. Loaded several in the 20-25 pound range. Switched to dead cig's while still chumming, and began loading up with 5-12 pound Red Snappers. Finally one of the flat lines went off about the same time the flyrod finally hooked up. 35 pound King on the flat line, 22 pound AJ on the flyrod, putting the fly angler in the lead in his fly club catch and release tournament.
Went back to chumming, the other flat line went off, landed 28 pound Blackfin. Then the two subs came flying back by, putting out about a 5 foot wake, appeared to have a naked Iraqi tied to the bow of one of 'em......
