For those of you who fish out of the south central area of Louisiana, you have probably heard about Acadiana Marina. It was a small, remote marina that housed everything from small aluminum boats to large Hatteras and Bertram flybridge yachts. After hurricane Rita devastated the southern marsh and towns of Grand Chenier and Pecan Island, the marina was in shambles. Ownership was transferred a few times, and every new owner came with promises of renovations. After Gustav, Acadiana Marina was, again, nearly totally demolished. The thought of repairs had almost been abandoned, Luckily, ownership has transferred again, this time, not only promising results, but following up. After only 3 months of ownership, the new owner, John, has already improved the marina greatly. What used to be two ruts leading to the smaller boat sheds, is now a wide, flat, hard-pack gravel road, smooth and easy to navigate. He has already gone farther than any of the previous owners. After a trip this afternoon to investigate the possibility of leasing a new slip to accommodate our new 36' Contender, I realized that this man means business. After having a smaller slip there before, I knew how dilapidated the marina was, and how lax the rules were. I had personally talked to the previous owners, who will not be named, and was many times promised a gas station and a store, but not even the slightest measures were made towards improvements. I am not badmouthing the previous owners, but they just didn't follow up on the promises that were made. After my trip this afternoon, I saw the new owner, John, had already laid the foundation and ran electricity to the location of the new store and gas station. He showed me the blueprints for the layout, and his plan will make the marina look the way it should. There will be a building code for the camps that are built, keeping the area looking nice. He is also having SLEMCO come down and put the power lines underground, adding to the appeal, and also reducing the possibility of losing power. He currently has a large excavator in operation, and is cleaning out the marina and the slips, as well as replacing the bulkheads. All of the boat stalls will be repaired, and the small boat shed will have all new lifts installed. If you are a fisherman who likes the thought of a quiet and secluded, affordable, and still upscale marina, whether you fish offshore, or inshore, I urge you to take a trip to Acadiana Marina and look at what it has to offer. It may not look like much at the moment, but it is a work in progress. In order for the marina to be restored to it's full potential, it needs people to bring their boats. Please help to keep this project possible, and eventually finished. If you have any questions, or want information on how to contact the owner, let me know.
no, this is in Pecan Island, Louisiana, south of Kaplan. Leaving the marina, you end up at freshwater city, going through the Freshwater Bayou Locks to get into the gulf
Last time I tried to go there, about a year ago, there was a sign at the road that the landing was NOT open to the public. I was very disappointed and had to drive to IC to launch. I like going there for family "easy" fishing with my wife and daughter. We fish the canals for crabs, specks, reds, and catfish. I'm glad it's reopening. Is the launch open now?
By the way, do you work at LUS?
Mike

the price to keep a boat there is $300, but as of now, the launch is closed to the public until the store is built, then someone can be there to watch and charge a launch fee to people not leasing a slip. But no, i don't work for LUS, I am a student at ULL for engineering.
there is no public boat launch at Pecan Island-closest is Freshwater City-fair boat launch if the tide is high enough-low tide is bad-the road is normally terrible but it is under rebuild now
I called the guy that owned it twice about renting my old slip. No call back either time. Said they would get fuel, store, live bait. Doesn't look like they've done anything yet. The previous owner had those drawings and plans two years ago. I sure wish that place would get up and running again.
I leased a slip at this marina for years and years(25+). The old operator Simms ran things well as far as I am concerned. Nothing was ever stolen, and if you played within reason, he never bothered anyone. After he moved on the next operators,(I am not sure actual ownership has ever changed) talked a good line, but as the above posts mention, nothing was ever done to get things up and running. I checked about launching at the marina about a year ago and was given a $300.00/year quote. Considering I would probably launch less than 10 times per year and there was no parking area, I felt this was way out of line and said so. The operator at that time was firm and said they were priced that way to keep folks like me out. Not a very good way to run a business. If the new owner/operator really means business we will see in short order. I will be headed down that way this afternoon to check things out and report back. I would love to see this marina come back, but don't have much faith it will get done. Simms may be the only guy that could make it happen and I doubt he will ever be back.
Drove down to Pecan Island to check out the "new Acadiana marina". There has been a lot of work done since my last visit. Most of the debris has been cleared, the area around the covered sheds has been worked. Looks like the marina was dredged and the spoil spread evenly around the old area where the camps and store were located. Some new bulkhead work was done, but not completed. There were 4 boats in the sheds, a big Yellowfin, 36 Hatteras, and 2 - 26 Bertrams, everything else was empty. There was nobody around doing any work to speak to about their plans, and no phone number posted that we could see. Lots of work left to be done, but it does look like something may come of this effort. If anyone knows how to contact the new operators , please post the info.
Seatrout Developers, P.O. Box 121, Scott, La. 70583-do not have a phone number-I understand the old owners still own the boat launch-could not be worse!!!! The new owner is spending a lot of money on improvements, but do not see anything for fuel or ice and bait.
