Fourchon Saturday 5/31 report Actually, I went down Friday and planned to fish inshore for an hour or two out of Port Fourchon Marina. Got in the water around 6:30 and went to a nearby marsh area. Drank a few beers but didn't catch a single fish. It didn't matter, though, as it was nice just to get off work early Friday and get out on the water to run the boat.
Came in at dark and stopped at Toupsie's Restaurant to eat. I saw a couple of guys there that looked familiar. Sure enough, it was JJtabor from here and his buddy. Said hi to them after dinner. As were leaving after dinner a 36 yellowfin rigged for tournament fishing pulled up. Stopped and drooled for a little bit and then came back to reality. I don't think I'd be able to afford running one 300 hp motor much less 3.
The winds were blowing pretty good Friday evening so I had some concerns about going offshore Saturday morning. Sure enough, as we made our way to Belle Pass Saturday morning, we soon realized that it was still a little bit rough. The predicted 1-3 foot seas was accurate but closer to 3's at the pass. I had a couple of occasional fisherman in the boat so I made the decision to turn back around. Fishing in 2-3 foot seas is not particularly comfortable in my boat. We did see a 18-20 foot aluminum boat go out, though. Better them than me.
So, with some disappointment and a box full of pogies, we headed back inshore. Actually, we stopped by the sunken barges to fish for a little while but the southeast wind had the surf kind of rough so we didn't last long there. We went back inside to fish for a couple of hours and caught a few specks and reds.
By late morning, the winds seemed to have died down so we decided to take a peek at the pass to see if the seas were any better. It had gotten down to about 2's so we decided to go out. We went out to the close in rigs, only, because I really didn't want to make a long run if I had to pound back in 3 foot seas. Fished in 50-60 feet of water and caught a few mangroves, triggers, and an assortment of other trash fish on pogies and jigs. The water still looked terrible, just a murky brown with just a little bit of green to it.
We decided to call it a day about 1:30 as the winds were picking up. By then, the 2 foot seas were starting to whitecap and one of the guys was looking a little worn out.
Overall, not a great trip but we did catch a few fish, the boat didn't break down and we didn't run out of beer. So, I guess it wasn't too bad. Until next time... |
