May 24-25 overnighter and trip out west near the flower gardens this week
I brought the head of CT surgery for our program on a fun trip this past saturday and sunday. The weather was awful but they insisted on going. They sure proved me wrong, never complaining while getting tossed around in the 6-8's in the canyon. They cried uncle after a limit of jacks and 12 yellowfin, 4 of which were just over 100.
This week we made a trip WWWWAAAAAAYYYYY west near the flower gardens and were hoping for some nice grouper and big AJ's for the STAR tournament. The weather was uncooperative again and the current was even worse. I have never seen the current as bad as we had it for two days. Every rig we fish within a 50 mile radius had 8-12 knot current. We had to use two 40 ounce lead ball on each line just to attempt to get down. We ended the trip with a nice 72 pound warsaw, a handful of gags, and limit of jacks. It was a very unimpressive trip and I don't think I will be going that far west again anytime soon.

JJ - Forgive my ignorance but what does the "CT" stand for in CT surgery? Very nice fish by the way!
Not sure if you read it, but there was an article in the LA Sportsman a few months ago about a toxin called ciguatera that was concentrated in the grouper, snapper, and AJ's near Flower Gardens. Cooking wont kill it and some people have gotten very, very ill. If anyone you know has nausea, vomiting, vertigo or joint pain after eating those fish take them to a doctor - or just take a look at them yourself.
