Random Quote: BOAT....Bring Out Another Thousand!!
I need to register my used boat that I picked up a few months ago.. Am I correct in thinking that I don't have to pay tax on a used boat when I go to the DMV? I only pay tax on the trailer, correct?
if the boat is less than 10 years old you have to pay sales taxes on the amount of the total sale. I bought my world cat from NC last year and thought i only had to pay sales taxes only on the trailer . Wrong, i had to pay sales taxes on the entire rig because it was less than 10 years old. I had to pay it in order to get my registration on the boat. You might want to check the louisiana wildlife and fisheries web site for more info. There are forms you can print out for your taxes. Im almost sure same applies if you buy a used boat also in our state.
Here's what they (LA Dept of Revenue) told me when I bought my boat 2 yr ago:
Out of state, in state, doesn't matter. If you bought your boat from a private individual who already paid sales tax on the boat, even if it was in another state, then you don't have to pay sales tax. You will have to show documentation that the person you bought the boat from paid sales tax. If you bought your boat from a place that is in the bussiness of selling boats, then you have to pay sales tax. Contact the La Dept of Revenue. They can tell you exactly what you need to know and what forms you will need to get it done.
I bought my boat from a private individual in Florida and I paid no sales tax on my boat. But I did have to show the Dept of Revenue that sales tax had been paid on the boat in Florida.

DFreedom Jeez MORONZO, you just never seem to get it.
I have the registration from the previous owner in FL.. in the sales tax box.. it states that the tax was collected by the broker. Is this what I'm looking for?
Trav, in the box you're speaking of, I assume you are referring to the taxes paid by the previous owner. If this is correct, then you should be good to go. Otherwise, other proper documentation may be needed. To be safe and save yourself a trip to Hell (otherwise known as DMV), I'd place a call to them to find out. I have a few contacts at DMV if you need any help. Just let me know.
