We decided to try to take advantage of the great
predicted weather on Saturday and launched the boat in Fourchon at about 7. We drove through some rain on the way down but it cleared and the sun was shining as we headed into the gulf on low, spaced out rollers. About halfway to our first stop though the seas picked up big time and we were getting beat up by a nasty chop, but we wanted fish in the box. First stop was in the GI area in about 350' and we quickly lost a jig and picked up a shark but decided to be patient. After about 5 minutes I felt the thud of an AJ and we got into them pretty thick. First one in was smallish and right at the size limit so we let him swim...
That paid off because with every drop the fish got bigger and bigger. This guy gave my dad quite a ride and was acting up to make for quite a picture:
We also had a big lemonfish mixed in with these, but we lost him at the boat trying to get him on the gaff. After catching out limit and releasing some more, we all started feeling a little green so we decided to push on for some fresh air. We found some great looking water so we decided to pull some lures in hopes of finding some wahoo, but after about an hour the weather to the south started to look quite gloomy, so we called it a day rather than take any chances.
The weather chased us all the way in, and as we we putting the boat on the trailer the thunder and rain were just moving in on us. The water was nasty all the way in, but at least we stayed dry.
I'm putting in a few pics from last week as well, just for fun...The first is one of the triggers we caught and the second is a big red that surprised me in about 250' of water. He wouldn't have made it if released and I hate to waste a fish like that, so we donated him to the Chevron workers watching us fish...
