Default New Red Snapper Regs

I was told by a guy at a reputable tackle shop that along with the June 1 regs of non-stainless circle hooks for natural baits, a "certified dehooker" and a "certified" venting device were required. Apparently a pair of pliers are not suitable for removing a hook and NMFS feels I should contribute my money to a private company to by THEIR tool. And who is "certifying" syringes in the first place? This just seems a little out of control even for people who have a loose grip on reality.

Sounds to me that your tackle shop dealer must be selling "certified" equipment. I have read over the regs several times and while you are correct, a dehooker and venting tool is being required, there is nothing said about "certification" and frankly I do not believe that they exist.

Trust me once you learn how to use a de-hooker, the pliers will be a distant memory, especially on circle hooks.

I'm not to hot on the idea of having a syringe on board to be honest.

I called the Alabama State folks on Dauphin Island and he sent me two of the syringe/venting tools for free back in October. Give them a try.
