Default max trailer width??

I am in Mobile. My boat is 24' long but is 8'8" wide. It sits on a Tandum trailer with disc brakes on one axle. I pull it with an F350 SRW and it is well UNDER my max weight.
I mainly trailer in Alabama but will venture over to Fla and Miss. from time to time.

My question, anybody ever been pulled over in this area for being too wide? If so, how long was your boat? And how much over were you?

I am thinking that with only a 24'er I'll be fine without getting a DOT permit. It's only two little inches....

Opinions.....

You will be fine on width, you need to check on tag though. Because we are not required to tag our trailers and they are, I believe if you want to trailer over there you will be required to tag it. Check with Fl and Ms DOT to be positive.

8'6" is the max. width in the United States. You shouldn't be bothered being 2" over the limit, it's only 1" on each side, who's going to notice.
Do you mean you don't need a tag in AL? Don't you even have to register a trailer? I never heard of that on before.

That is correct, no tag on boat trailers. You don't need a title for a boat trailer unless you sell it out of state.

You also don't need a tag if you are traveling through Mississippi or Florida as long as you are registered in Alabama. Reciprocity applies in that case. They respect the laws of the other states.

I have been stopped by a Trooper for being too wide, at least he thought I was. Actually I was 7' 10", and he didn't have any way to verify it and let me go.

I was also stopped in Texas for no trailer tag. I told him I was from Alabama and we don't need trailer tags there. His response was "You're in Texas now, Boy!" I told him to either write me up or let me go. Of course he let me go, he was just pushing his power, as is sometimes done by people who never had power before in their lives.
