The lump is a salt dome in 4-600 feet of water and on top of it is about 200 feet (think of an underwater mountain) approx 17 nm from the mouth of SW Pass Mississippi River.
Search "midnight lump" on google and you will pull up a ton of info I'm sure.
If the boat you're talking about was a 24 ft boat with three people (dad and two sons) then my brother was the one who rescued them. Here is a link to the abc station in New Orleans that had a story about it. My brother just happened to be in the right place at the right time to get them. Their boat sunk a couple of minutes after they got them on board. Just goes to show that you need to be prepaired at any given time.
All three people on the boat that went down on Monday were rescued. Good lesson, if you fish that area (or any offshore area), you need flotation devices, flares, a registered 406 epirb, and a life raft. I am one of the Coasties that works that area and if you don't have the above mentioned safety equipment, your chances of us finding you are slim due to the currents and depth of the water.

That's the first post your brother made about the boat going down. I read all of them and he NEVER mentioned that he was the one that actually rescued them. Thanks for the link and thanks to your very humble brother!
My brother and his wife went out for tuna and didn't catch anything, they just about canceled but decided to go anyways. Lucky for those guys they did. Those guys wouldn't have survived the night since it was a couple hours infront of a cold front when their boat sank.
Boomer- I figure you've heard him over the radios when you're working. My brother doesn't post on THT, but I figured he deserved some recognition for that rescue.

I didn't mention it in my other post, but he was not on duty at the time. He was out in his own boat and just happened to be at the right place, right time.

well, that's usually what happens when a boat sinks.. Did a thru-hull break.. a hose.. something? Obviously, there were other boats in the area, so the weather must have not been a huge factor.. ?

.
Thank you for telling me. I'll look this up tonight. I've been in that area and had no idea about salt domes.
I belive it was a 24 Sea Ray. I talked to my brother tonight and they recieved a report about an overturned 24 ft boat about 40 miles southwest of where my brother resuced the guys. They flew in the area of the report searching for the overturned boat today and he found it (again). ironic that he found the boat a second time a week later. It looks like it's drifting on it's way to texas now.

I talked with him about that on the phone tonight. It's weird, but I end up pulling SAR when I'm on my personal boat pretty often.
