Man.. I keep hearing good reports of Specks. I think Im going to try and go on Friday. Havent been specking in about three years. I used to love catching them. Guess I might start giving it a shot again.. Ive heard the bight has been real good in the rivers!!!!
Went in the Delta Saturday. We caught a few though the bite never really turned on before we had to leave. We got in the water about 7 and was home at 2:30 and ended up keeping a dozen. I have not spoken to anyone else that fished to see if anyone really got into them.
The specs have moved further north in the delta, you can still catch them around the causeway don't get me wrong, but the high salinity has pushed them way up there. We had a great trip Sunday up there.
Saturday Fowl River was a bust for me & the folks that I ran into while fishing, bunch of "peter" trout in there. Talked to some folks that tore the red fish up in Fowl River on Thurs & Fri. though. Right now getting "way up" in the Delta is your best bet.
oh yeah there deffinatly there you just got to get on them. sometimes where the birds are there ussually is bait and that means fish. they are up river aways last time i went i went to gravine island and got a limit. live shrimp and gulps work well.
yeah they're deffintly way up in the rivers because of the high salinity i think. i havnt tried 12 mile island yet but they are probaly there too.
Thats the area(12 mile island) I was in and around when we tore them up this past weekend. Fished the same time as a friend he was down near the bayway and the raft river and they didnt do too good in the same amount if time.
Im not sure how much rain we will get in the next few days but if its much it will push those specs back down the delta some. Im bet the bass fisherman are tired of catching specs.
haha yeah i bet it will push them down again next to the causeway but hey.. i cant get enough specks i would take them over anything. there fun to catch especially those monsters that are thrown in every once in awile.
Went up the Mobile River today and didn't find the specs but did get into the Reds and some white trout. I should have gone out in the Gulf and slayed the Bull Reds but we launched on the causeway and I didn't want to burn all the gas.
It was good to get some fish in my new boat though. Next week after the cold front that should be comming, I'll be hitting the Gulf and burning up the reels on the Bulls.....

What are you guys using to catch specs or reds? I want to start fishing inshore this winter but don't know a lot about the tackle, bait or techniques used to catch specs or reds around the causeway or up the rivers. Use to using a 6/0 reel, bottom fishing off a reef or rig, which doesn't seem real tricky. If they bite in about 10 seconds you are on a fishing hole if not move on.
Begging for some tips guys, bait, tackle, fishing holes or areas whatever you can tell me I would appreciate it. Just want to catch some edible fish.
The bite has slowed down quite a bit. Three weeks ago we had a great day at "No Name Cut" on the NW end of Gravine Island. Schools of shrimp were everywhere. Two weeks ago we did some good at Tensaw Point. Caught a few specks before slack low tide then the schools of reds moved in and you couldn't catch a speck because the reds would hit before your bait could sink. Last week was slow and then we had three inches of rain. I'm planning to give it a try on Thursday the 27th. I'm betting the specks have moved south a ways because of the rain. I may start at Tensaw Point then move down to the Battery or below the Bayway if the upstream bite is slow. So far a popping cork has been real good but grubs and live shrimp on the bottom is producing too. I prefer a popping cork with a shrimp or a grub. I just love to see that cork getting a good strong pull. Good fishing.
gulp shrimp lures with a jig head it really doesnt matter what size the jig head is they all seem to work the same for me. then i have an extra pole with a popping cork with a fake shrimp or live, just use that as a drift pole and give it a few jerks every now and then. if you see birds diving around the water go next to them and there are usually specks underneath them.
I want to try the Gulp Shrimp lures. Where are they selling? Wal-Mart seems to not stock them. Grubs seem to do fine in the Delta but I'd sure like to try the Gulps. I've been hearing only good things.
Thanks. We'll be going out of Scotts in the morning (Thursday) so I'll grap a package. Looks like a little wind out of the NW earlier then swinging around to the South. I sedom do well with a NW or North wind but I've got a strong fishing "jones" and tomorrow looks like the best day this week. I hope the water has cleaned up since the big rain.
Went down to Scotts today around noon. Couple of boats pulled in with limits of specks. Folks said they are everywhere and the bite is on. I'm heading out about 7:30 in the morning weather permitting. I'll report back.
