Default Overnighter 6/30 -7/1

Left home about 10am Sat. and headed to the coast with my wife and buddy Roger. We stopped and iced up and bought pogies and went by Wal-Mart for the license fiasco. After being told a 10 day grace period was being allowed in Ms. we headed out from Bayou Caddy. We fished around the old Conservation camp for a little while and picked up 2 nice trout about 3 lbs. each and a few croakers that went in the livewell for bait. We headed on out to Freemason to spend the night and were overun by ladyfish. We picked up 1 more trout there and called it quits for the day. After my bride warmed up some spaghetti she made for the trip we hit the bean bags. We got up the next morning and after making our coffee we headed south. We hit my favorite rig in the MP block first and on my first drop I had a good fish on. After wrestling a bit I was wondering what I had on and got excited when I saw red. First drop first fish a 25lb. snap. Roger bowed up and caught another snapper about 20lbs. and then the sharks took over. We made a short move and more sharks. We headed on out to the City rigs and tied up to an unmanned platform. After several breakoffs Roger had a good fish coming up and I gaffed {in the mouth 1st shot, Gordon} a Warsaw of about 35-40 lbs. We managed to finish our measley snapper limit at this rig with smaller fish about 5- 8 lbs. and several more breakoffs. We headed north to hit the shrimp boats on the way in and ran the east side of the Chandeleurs. The first boat we stopped at wasn't anchored they were drifting but we hit it anyway. Nothing at this boat so we dicided to head northeast to about 6 boats anchored up in a line. After reeling in I hit the throttles and my starboard motor immediately started alarming. What the H E L L? Checked what we could check and headed for the hill on the port motor. I looked at my plotter and we were 38.75 nm from the ramp in a straight line. The problem here was we still had to clear the north end of Chandeleur. So we head north for about 2 hrs. then headed west just missing the new light at the north end. The wind had really gotten up out of the soutwest with a close nasty 2 ft. chop with a 3 thrown in frequently. I was SOAKED pretty quick. Onward at 7 kts. We got back to the marsh and I run the backside of Isle Au Pitre to miss Flatboat key. We got into Grand Pass and the port motor started alarming. Low oil. Luckily I had 3 pints of oil for such emergencies. I took the cowling off and added the oil and it's off again. A nearby thunderstorm really got the chop going and at 7 knots it was NASTY. We got to about 2 miles from Bayou Caddy and another alarm. Added more oil in the rough stuff. We got to the ramp at 10:15 pm and finally made it home at 1 am. I think my wife has had enough fishing the big water for awhile. Digital camera not working so no pics til I get the film developed. I've decided from now on when fishing the rigs I'll be launching further to the east and not have as many obstacles to deal with. Oh, we burned 110 gals. out of 135 gallon tank on this trip.

First time with the gaff? Come on now Boomer, Grouper don't count since they just lay there like a paper bag when you pull them up from 200'. Kind of like picking up a soft shell crab in 1 inch of water.
Glad y'all caught some fish an got home safe. I tried hollering at you on my way in Saturday and couldn't get you. I had PLENTY of bait left over I was willing to run over to you. Seems like you use much less when you fish behind the shrimpers b/c you don't have all of the snapper, bluefish, triggers, and hardtails hitting you on the way down.
I'm done fishing for a while, at least until the newborn turns a month old. Until then, I hope you can catch my share of fish. I just hope they're fish you can sling in the boat so you don't have to gaff them.
