david,

We'll be leaivng Venice tomorrow afternoon for an overnighter in the Canyon. We plan on running long unless we find anything worth setting up on short. I'll be on a friend's 32' Wellcraft, Snatcher II on 68.

Ran over 100 miles(1 way) to the Floaters and when we arrived the Tuna were busting the surface. Proceeded with the poppers and yummee ff and caught 7 YFT (60-80#) on Spinning Gear. That is my new favorite way to catch tuna.
1.Throw popper as far as you can.
2.Reel in as fast as you can
3.Hold on!
On the way back in stopped in Shallow(er) water and picked up 3 nice Cobia (30,35 & 45#)and a couple of nice Mangroves and 1 fat white trout.
One of the funnest trips I have ever been on. Thanks go out to my friend Davis Daniel for including me.
250 mile round trip on about 100 gallons those 4s Zukes are the ticket.

I have fished the last 3 weekends offshore so I will probably have to skip this weekend to put up that #^@*#ing swingset.

Ben,
How did you guys do?

David,

Sounds like a great trip. You'll be eating well...

We had a pretty good trip as well. We struggled to make bait (or at least the right bait) on the way out but managed to put a few in the livewell before getting to the first floater 30 mles from S Pass. Yellowfin would come up for 30 seconds every 20 minutes or so, but we couldn't entice them with anything we had. Tried live baiting, chunking, poppers, trolling, etc. Looked like a couple of the charter boats there were doing about the same. Decided to change tactics and pull for a while and did pretty well on the wahoo and dolphin along with a few blackfin. Managed to go 3/6 on wahoo and landed a few nice dolphin and blackfin as well. Watched the sun go down there and it pretty much went dead except for a few oversized blackfin. Picked up and ran another 25 miles south where it was absolutely on fire. As we're approaching the rig, the two lines out the back go off, and the three guys in front with poppers simultaneously hook up. 5 fish on! Talk about Chinese fire drill. We manage to put a decent yellow and 2 big blacks from that in the boat and pulled hooks on the two others which I assumed were yellows. Got reset after that and had constant action for the next couple of hours before we called it quits. Broke off several big fish including an absolute stud that we got one brief look at before making his 3rd HUGE run. Ended up losing him to the cables on another floater we had drifted by during the fight. Pretty much anything that hit the water was an instantaneous hookup.

Final tally was
4 yft 60, 70, 75, 100 lb
12 bft all 25+ lb, released countless smaller ones
2 bulls 35 and 50+ lb along with 5-6 smaller ones
3 wahoo 25-35 lb

All in all it was a great trip, and the weather couldn't have been better. I'll see how I can manage to eat or get rid of all of this fish and plan on doing it all over again in a week or so.
