Call recreational Specialties in Baton Rouge if that is an option to you. They work on a lot of Mercs and Mike is famous for not throwing anything away. If he does not have it new, he almost certainly will have a used one. Don't know the number off the top of my head, it's on Greenwell Springs Rd.

My friend has had his alts redone at an alternator shop. Merc would like you to believe it can't be done that way, but, his are running fine and his Optis are 2004 models. Not sure if they replaced his regulators or windings mind you, but, couldn't hurt to try an alternator shop and see what they saw once they actually look at it and find it is moslty a Delco 60 amp Marine alternator.

Mike didn't refer you to the guy in Baker? Don't know his name but he buys and rebuilds old motors, he and Mike swap off stuff a lot. Call Mike and ask him for the guy's number, he'll know who I am talking about.

If not call Landry's Outboard Service in DesAllmands, he may have one laying around.

If all else fails, do a google search for that part number, I find them all over the place for about $200.00. Says it has an internal regulator.

Thanks Daryl. No,it s regulator is bolted to the bottom of it.I have to alternator shops looking for a regulator. Both told me that there is a after market replacement part, but still unable to find one.I see that a replacement alternator is around $200,guess I will have to pay to play.

Capt_dalton,could you find out from your buddy how and were he had his redone?

When I did the Google search it seemed to say that there is a newer design that replaces it with the internal regulator, that may be where you are running into problems.

Obviously you are close to Baton Rouge. There is an alternator / starter shop on Airline Hwy just north of Hanks Dr. That's in the Hood so be careful. Anyway they have been there for years, they have a little blue and white sign out by the road. I know several guys that have taken marine starters and alternators there for repair. Again, I can point you but I am coming up short on the name. Too many Coors Lights I guess, they catch up with you as you get older.

At this point it sounds like all of the running around is about to cost you $200, sometimes you spend more trying to save a few dollars. As my old boss used to say about the company I worked for ......."they are so busy bending over to pick up dimes that they don't realize that $5 bills are flying out of their back pockets." Look at it this way, if you buy the new one, you can eventually have the old one rebuilt and now you have a spare in case this happens again.

Good Luck, I gotta get out of here, road trip this morning ..........

Sounds like a good price there. One of the Merc dealers in town here is getting ~$400 for one.

I believe this is the place that helped my friend:

Franklin's Alternator and Starter
6520 Rester Road, Theodore, AL 36582
