My experience out of Fourchon about 20 miles south. But during a trip to Brutus a friends cingular worked 50 miles out.

If you have your cell phone on near an oil rig that has a PetroCom tower on it, you can roam on them. However, you'll need to speak to your finacial advisor when you return to the house to pay the bill. They offer subscriptions to use them, but, even then it is pretty high. You will know you're roaming on them though. It should show PetroCom on your cell.

They have a website, check it out.

Just prior to Katrina I called from the SW - S Tim. rigs (50+) on Cingular... two other phones on the boat wouldn't.
My bill read Leeville $1.35 a min.

My Nextel always worked 20 miles out or so from Fourchon (and they don't roam). Never tried using it further than that.
