Default WOMAN KILLED AT HORN ISLAND

THERE WAS A WOMAN KILLED AT HORN ISLAND SUNDAY. THIS IS WHAT THE ARTICLE FROM WLOX STATED:

It's been a deadly holiday weekend on the water in South Mississippi.

A Gulfport woman was killed Sunday afternoon off of Horn Island when she became entangled in a boat propeller. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus says Kellie Ramsey, 35, died of massive injuries from the propeller.

Rangers from Gulf Island National Seashore responded to a call for help around 4pm Sunday.

Robert Harris with Gulf Islands told WLOX News Ramsey had been on an 18 foot pleasure boat with friends before the accident. Harris says it's unclear how Ramsey ended up caught up in the propeller.

The investigation continues.

This is the second accident of this nature I have heard of. My wife had a patient recently that was tossed from the front of an open bow when it struck a sand bar. He was a obviously more fortunate but was in serious condition. Hmmmmm.... Really makes you think.

I HEARD FROM A FRIEND OF A FRIEND (YOU KNOW HOW THAT GOES SOMETIMES) BUT ANYWAYS, THE WOMAN GOT OFF THE BACK OF THE BOAT TO PEE AND SOMEHOW GOT HER HAIR CAUGHT IN THE PROP AND KILLED HER. I WAS TOLD SHE WAS PARTIALLY DECAPITATED. I FEEL FOR HER FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

The report for the girl killed a Horn was that she was climbing back onto the boat and got sucked into the prop wash. Very, very sad.

Yes...really sad...she left two kids behind. I don't believe that alcohol was even mentioned. I see that a lot of safety concerns go out the window when people do two things: get on the water...and get on a four wheeler. I know everyone on here will be careful now and everyone is probably careful anyway...it just drives the point home as to how dangerous things can be.

Am I missing something? She is climbing into boat and gets sucked into prop wash, ie; turning props. Surely this is a reporting error. Even when I used to drink I always had an aversion to turning props and what was the operator doing while ( if the incident happened this way) an individual decided to climb up with engine running? This does not make sense?

What was the operator thinking? I know on my boat if anybody in in the water within 20' of the boat the motor is OFF, not neutral, OFF. 20' is within distance to throw a lifeline or ring if in deep water. I know it's easy for us to say what we would have done and I know we were not there but this seems so senseless. I'm sorry for the family of the victim as well as the operator who must feel awful. A poignant reminder of the responsibility that we as owner operators have with regard to our passengers who may not be aware of the inherent dangers associated with boating.

Check your safety gear regularly

Sucked in sounds like the boat was in reverse, if it was in forward the boat would be moving away pushing her in the opposite direction. Was the operator backing up to her? That is beyond stupid...

probably...wasnt the first time its happend and wont be the last
the comment above about boats & 4-wheelers is right on...put some people behind the wheel of either and they flat-out lose their minds

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THEY ALL WERE DRINKING AND SHE WAS BEHIND THE BOAT AND SOMEONE PUT IT IN REVERSE AND THE REST IS HISTORY.

Yes. I just found out thatone of myfriends works with a woman who used to baby-sit (a few years ****** for thewoman who got killed. She still lives next to the woman'sgrandmother. Evidently, the woman did climb down off the stern to pee while the motor was till running. A big wave pushed her into the turning prop. They either did not take a boating safety course, or obviously did not follow the safety rules.
