Anyone see the article the other day in the sun Herald where some boat got busted with 500 Lbs of Grouper on board? That is not good...I hope this is an isolated incident. We're already getting the squeeze from the overfishing of snapper.
Limits and seasons exist for a reason. Why people decide to break the rules...I guess it is for money most times...is beyond me. The April Nat'l Geographic had a lot of articles about fisheries around the world being overfished by unregulated commercial operations. They offered some hope through "ranching" of fish, but it was a grim picture. Tuna are especially a concern.
After seeing what overfishing does and considering how much I like to do it...I end up feeling guilty every time I clean a trout and it is full of eggs.
Do we really have enough protection in place here to sustain what we have? I know I get checked all the time, but then I hear about people sneaking in with undersized fish and too many.
I guess it is up to us to police our own. Kind of like dealing with litterbugs on the roadways...
