Boataholic, I don't know any charter captains in that area. Russ, I looked at all the pics Bass Haven has on their site. It does look good. I will def check it out. And Russ i do plan on having some major work done on my boat. I would love any advise on where to go and where to stay away from. So you can PM me if you would be willing to share your knowledge in that area.

I have been using Mike's Dockside Service for several years, the guy that runs the place is named Rory and he knows me pretty well. I have found them to be VERY honest, get things done when they say they will, and very reasonable prices. I have spent over $6K with them over the past 4 years and am going to have some work done there this spring.

I have a 28' Baha and Rory knows the boat all to well! I don't know for sure but it's worth a try to mention I referred you and he may give you a discount.

Regarding Bass Haven, I have docked at many marina's over my 30+ years of boating and Bass Haven is the best. The place is owned by brothers Greg and Gary, Greg has been such a good guy to me and he had no idea who I was when I first started docking there. The first year I was there I had my boat in the parking area before I was having it put in and I wanted to take the prop off and have it fixed. I forgot my prop wrench so I asked Greg if he had one I could borrow, he gave me the key to their tool shop and told me to use whatever I want and give him the key back when I was done. Who does that for someone they had never met? I have at least 3 other circumstances that they went over and above anything I expected from them.

If you want to talk to me please feel free to call me anytime: Russ mobile# 419-376-9399

I only buy parts from Dubberts as I had 2 bad experiences with the service dept. there. Now, I have talked to people that love them. As for Rory at Mikes Dockside, you won't find a better guy than Rory. They run a first class operation, I have been dealing with them for 20 plus years.

I know others say good things about Mike's but I was not impressed with him or his service at all. Have several friends that won't use him again either.

I had Harry at Right Way Marine do several things for me and he treated me more then fair. They are on the south side of 163, just west of 269.

Your the first person I have ever heard say anything negative about Mike's. It's good to hear of another place though. Competition always benefits the consumer.

Will Right Way come to your boat during the season? Mike's does work in the boat right at my dock. They fixed some messed up wiring, replaced all of my gauges, and resealed the windows on the side of the cuddy.

You are truly the ONLY person I have heard anything bad about Mike's. I guess you can't make everyone happy. Can you elaborate on what they did wrong, I would just be curious what happened? You have used Dubberts right?

Russ, It's not a case of making everyone happy. I can think of at least 3 people at bass haven who are dissatisfied with Mike's and they've all let bass haven know as bass haven recommends them.
Yes, Right Way will come to your boat. They are a small shop though, basically father and son.
It's not so much what Mike's did wrong..as they didn't do stuff right. They would perform one thing, and leave without really testing the boat under load etc. Basically I had problems with boat dying when shifting forward and reverse. It's like they just threw solutions at it. If one thing didn't work, they'd do another. Then leave. I'd take boat out, it would die again. Call and they'd come back and cost me another $500 +.

Right Way came out and worked through it. It cost me some additional money but he solved the problem.
I didn't really care for the way the gal in the office had her nose up in the air either. I stood there for 15 minutes one day while she was buried in her computer...she never even once acknowledged me or said "be with you in a minute".

All of those things would certainly piss me off too. I guess I've been fortunate and haven't had those problems. The only issue I had with Mike's is when they rebuilt my transmission it was leaking fluid and it took them awhile to come out to see what the problem was. No shop is perfect and I could have an awful experience at Mike's in the future, that's just the way life is. Your comment about the girl at the counter....that happened to me the first time I went in there, she doesn't act like the happiest person that's for sure.

I didn't know Right Way would come to your boat, they need to advertise that. It's hard getting anyone at Mike's to come to your boat at certain times of the season, I would be nice to have a 2nd source so I will certainly make Right Way my secondary source based on your recommendation.

Default a few other recommendations

For onsite service - particularly diesels, I highly recommend T Diesel out of Port Clinton. He quickly identified and fixed a problem another guy (name I won't mention) out of Huron who screwed up my boat. My CC goes to Dubberts in Pt Clinton. I believe they also do dockside service.

By the way -as you're looking for docks- don't eliminate rack storage. There are two places on Catawba Island (Northwest Catawba Rd) that have it with the benefit of being right on Lake Erie. While there are nice marinas in West Harbor - remember it'll take a bit to get out onto to the lake. Additionally the two I mentioned are very protected in the springtime - when we have very strong north-easterlies. PM me if you want the names - I'm not associated with either BTW.

Here is a little tidbit of information.....the girl that works the counter is Rory's wife. I found this out the hard way when I asked Rory "what is Ms. Happy's problem, what a hag!"

That's when I found out it was Rory's wife.....I have a way with words doin't I!!!
