Default Just a comment on Greg Group

I recently acquired an '87 Blackfin 29FB through South Shore Marine. They reccomended Greg Group (among others to be fair). He had surveyed this particular boat at least twice in the past so I chose him.

I am not sure he ever set foot on the boat. He missed pretty much everything there was to miss. He did supply me with a bunch of out of focus pictures of a hand holding a moisture meter.

When I called him to ask about what I should think about the moisture meter readings he said "If you are worried about that then should but Golf Clubs."

I thought "OK, I guess it is not that big a deal".

Now I had looked at the boat from a cosmetic viewpoint and it looks good but I depended on him to tell me what else might be an issue. Once the boat was delivered I opened a hatch to turn on the port battery ("Boxed and secured properly") and my high school aged daughter pipes up with " Why is there tape all over that battery cable ??". Turns out that someone had spliced a ground cable to another battery cable with a bolt and some sloppy tape. Not to mention that the battery was just sitting on a stringer with no hold down at all.

The list goes on with the condition of the boat directly contradicting his report. If you want to hear about windshields caulked with household silicone ("felts need attention"), cleary rotten deck coring at hawse pipes, swim platform with loose bolts through transom, etc... none of which was noted PM me and I will be happy to reply.

Either Greg Group can't see, is incompetent, or worse in my opinion....

I would hire someone else if I were you.

Thanks for the comment.
I am going with a gentleman named Ira Jones. So far he has been excellent at gathering background info, recalls on the engines and general regard for me, the buyers well being.
The boat is to be officially surveyed this weekend and I will let you know how it went.
James

Just for the sake of this thread and this forum; I would like to hear Greg's side of this one. Have known him for over 20 years and have had many surveys by him where he has found much others have missed. Sorry, but he is tops in my book.

Whatever, I have the boat and the report. He had surveyed the boat a couple times before and maybe he just needed a quick buck. That would be my most benevolent explanation......

You may want to check dates before you post; the last post, by me, on this one was in 2009; very dead issue by now. Just fyi
