Hey, Gang! Hope you had long w/end!!!!
Anyway, I had post before about trip to Lake Erie, Erie, PA. Want to get ready. Sounds like I have to learn some Dipsy tips. I just got 2 mini ones . Went fishing Round Valley and tried to play with adjustment, for some reason they don't go far to the left or right. Was trolling 1.8- 2MPH. I should say, that they were only 15-20 Degrees from the center line off the transom. I used Cabelas Guide: http://www.cabelas.com/story-123/luh...52BDiver.shtml
Was using spoons, plugs, and Rapala divers- same thing. Got few lakers on downriggers, but!#$% on Dipsy. My leader off the dipsy was 4Ft. My reels have counters on them, so I know how much line is out. Rods 8' Med. action. Am I doing something wrong? Also, what is the best color and bait? I will be in Sara's Campgrounds on July 15- 20. Would love to troll the lake .
Thanx!

Great article Mike thanks for posting it.
Bornfishing,
Lots to learn about Dipsey's for sure. If you go to Erie Outfitters and talk with Craig in Avon he will show you the how's and why's of Dipsey fishing. Great guy and has everything you need to get going.
Good luck and let us know how you do. I will post up a picture of a 29" 9.5lber that my fiance caught Saturday.

I'm sure there are bait shops around Erie PA I personally don't know of any. They should all be willing to explain to you how to use the Dipsey's and get you going. Also check out www.thenextbite.com lots of good info there it is owned by top Pro walleye guy's. The search feature works well and you will find articles and video's to check out.
The easiest way to learn would be to charter a guide for one day and have him teach you I think this would be money well spent. I will be back to Erie in the Fall but will be pulling crankbaits then.
If you have any specific questions just ask and I will do the best I can to answer.

Oh one more thing when you are on the lake listen to probably CH 79 or 80 on the VHF and you will hear what people are doing to catch fish. They will say what size Dipsey what setting and how far back which is very helpful plus what harness color or spoon color they are getting fish on. The local bait shop should be able to fix you up with the colors that are working at the time you are there. I wouldn't go buy any until you get there because it can and will change from day to day.
Also you might catch some Steelheads while there they are running now east of Cleveland I was fishing Geneva when we caught those fish shown above and I will post more soon of the rest of the day's catch. All walleye were between 6 and 7 lbs.
Buy 4 kelly green size "1" and topshot your reels with about 400' of 15# fireline, tie the dipsey on with a palomar knot set the keel on 3.5 for your outside and 2 on you insides put a 6-8' leader of 15-17# mono on and then a crawler harness or stinger spoon, I prefer copper when its sunny and black/purple when its overcast. Set your troll speed at about 2.2-2.7 let it out around 175' or so on the ins and 225 or so on the outs. You'll have to adjust the set screw on the dipsey where it latches up so that it will hold at troll speeds but will release with a firm pull. The hit is usually just a jogging of the rod so pay attention to them. If it looks like its hit, take the rod out of the holder and pull firmly to release it, you be able to feel it release with fireline. Set your drags to barely hold when there in the holder so a steelhead can't break you off. As the day progresses you should be letting out a little more line to get the diver deeper, I've caught a lot almost scraping the bottom in 70'. Once you've used them for a few hours the you'll get the hang of them. Good set-up for walleyes

And don't use deep divers off the back of them. It will make them plane up and defeat the diving action. Spoons, harnesses and shallow divers all work. Let them out slow so they don't helicopter down on you and get tangled up.
Slide divers are a great tool to use for walleye as well.
It is the same principal as the dipsey, but it allows a longer/"unlimited" leader behind the trolling sinker (dipsey).
Typically walleye guys will run 50 to 80 ft of leader behind the slide diver with a stick or worm harness. PM Timestwo on this site, he is better at this than I am
