Default boston whaler repower

On the table is a 1987 Boston Whaler 27FC. We are taking off the old 1987 OMC 235hp Seadrives (For Sale) and installing an outboard motor bracket with swim platform. The new power will be Twin Honda 225hp 4 strokes. With the price of gas these days the saving in fuel alone will almost pay the note on this project. But he is also getting the queit, clean, reliable, and smooth features of the Honda engines. This can be done with a lot of different boats including I/Os.

Coming Soon.....

Got our custom Armstrong bracket in
Time to do some measuring some more measuring
And a whole bunch of drilling
30 1/2" bolts and two tubes of 5200 and she is ready for some
HONDA POWER
Ordered the fly by wire controls steering cylinder and tie bar set up ripped out the dash and all motor related wiring
Wont be too long and this boat will be trolling for salmon on lake Michigan burning 1/5 the gas it burned before

Wow what a nice conversion! Plus you can get rid of the kicker and troll on one of the big motors. Nice. Be sure to post some numbers and let us know how they perform compared to the big gas hogs.

Sweet. Also, it looks like you have a nice dry transom. Enjoy Paul

Frank,
That last one has got to fly with those ponies on the back, sweet job you did with the old one also. Love your conversion threads.

Rich
With out doing any real tweaking the old girl is running in the low 50s
A little faster than the pair of 200hp two stokes we took off but it does it with a lot less fuel!!
Don’t think these jobs are easy they all most always need complete rewire jobs and some sort of transom repairs electronics upgrades ect ect
New motors don’t make a new boat!
But there are plenty of good old boats that warrant this sort of repower
Some of these boats are better quality built boats than any thing on the market today
If you can find one with no motors or may be known bad motors. You can put some thing together that’s cost effective and more than you could ever afford new for our season we have here on the great lakes

To this Armstrong bracketed Whaler owner, the bracket installation on the 27 is too low. I can't imagine a bracket with it's top surface at the waterline. That hull should have 30" counter rotating twins when mounted on a bracket, on a higher mounted bracket. When the hull was introduced, only 25" engines were available, and as a result the boat had a deeply notched transom. Same situation with the 25" SeaDrives - all that were available when the hull was built. Modern 30" engines allow a much better powerhead height on a deep hull like that.

My 25 hull was designed for twin 20" engines, but with the bracket setback, I had to go up to 25" models.

We rely on the engineers at Armstrong and Whaler to tell us where and how to mount our brackets if a motor is mounted to low it can cause proposing and a tremendous waste of fuel
A properly mounted motor will have water, while the boat is on plane hitting the gear case at or just above the cavitation plate on the gear case when the boat is at planning speeds
The 27 in the picture above now will wot at 50 mph and burn 32 gph at that speed. This is easily doubled what the sea drives efficiency was when they where new and almost 7 mph faster
We are extremely pleased with the mounting position of the bracket motors and the over outcome of the whole project on the 27 Especially the improved fuel economy
The 25 already had the bracket installed from the factory and was just a simple repower
30” motors are especially more desirable in salt water and require the bracket to be mounted another 5” up on the transom in fresh water. How ever this can present a problem netting salmon on the great lakes over the top of the motors as a personnel preference with out the need to protect the motors from salt water in some applications the 25” motors become the desired installation
