Default Depth/fish finders for shallow water and side scan units

Has anyone used or seen how the Humminbird side scan's work on Lake Erie? I fish shallow water around the islands and neither my Humminbird Matrix or my Lowrance unit will go shallower than 15'. I want something that will show me some bottom detail in water less than 10' so I was considering the side scan unit but I don't know how well this works in shallow water.
