A good friend of mine told me he heard from a Lake Erie charter captain that the DNR is talking about reducing the daily limit for yellow perch to 25 and the daily limit for walleye to 4.
Has anyone heard whether or not this is true?
With marina fuel @ $4+ a gallon and if the reduced fish limits are true, I am going to be down sizing my boat next year for sure.
Anyone interested in a Scarab Sport 302 w/ twin 225 Evinrudes??
I just received the new regs for Ontario. The limits, for 2008/2009, in Lake Erie, remain the same 6 walleye (pickerel) 50 yellow perch. I am sure that all states/provinces that border the lake would confer to set limits.
I think a reduction of 33% on the walleye limit and a 16% reduction on the perch limit is significant. Are the commerical fisherman going to have a reduced limit?
Cobra- The perch limit was brought down to 30 last year before perch season even started.
I know of the -proposal- to decrease the perch limit to 25, but haven't heard of the walleye proposal. Walleye numbers are up the last I heard.
The daily SPORT FISHING bag limit for yellow perch in Ohio's Western Lake Erie HAS BEEN PROPOSED BY THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, DIVISION OF WILDLIFE, TO BE reduced from 30 to 25 fish per day effective July 1, 2008. A decrease in the Ohio commercial fishery harvest is included in the proposal , WHICH PROPOSES TO MOVE THE OHIO YELLOW PERCH QUOTA (COMMERCIAL HARVEST) TO THE OHIO CENTRAL BASIN WATERS ONLY WITH NO COMMERCIAL HARVEST OF YELLOW PERCH IN OHIO'S WESTERN BASIN AFTER JULY 1, 2008. COMMERCIAL FISHERY OPERATIONS FOR OTHER SPECIES WILL BE PERMITTED TO CONTINUE IF THE PROPOSAL IS PASSED.
The yellow perch SPORT limit for Ohio's Central Basin (from Huron east) will remain at 30, as Central Basin yellow perch stocks are not observed to be as depressed as those in the Western Basin. In addition, the Ohio sportfishery harvest of Western Basin yellow perch exceeded the 2007 quota by an estimated 200,000 pounds. As the emphasis for management is placed on the sport fishery first, the proposal recommends reduction of the Western Basin yellow perch daily bag limit from 30 to 25, and not permitting any commercial harvest of yellow perch in Ohio Western Basin waters.
The reason for this reduction, according the Ohio Division of Wildlife, are indications that Western Basin yellow perch stocks have been determined to be lower than in 2007. According to Roger Knight, ODNR/DOW Lake Erie's Fishery Unit, this is a result of rather poor Western Basin yellow perch recruitment (hatches) during 2004, 2005 and 2006. Although the 2007 yellow perch hatch was determined to be good, these fish will not become part of the sport catch until 2009-2010. This was determined after data comparison from Ohio, Canada and Michigan, including both sport and commercial harvest records.
Thus, the sport harvest reduction and movement of all yellow perch commercial harvest to the Central Basin (Western Basin) is being proposed in order to rebuild and maintain a viable Ohio Western Basin yellow perch population for future years.
If the proposal is approved, and reduced Western Basin yellow perch harvest (sport and commercial) is successful, population levels are expected to rebound by 2009 to 2010, due primarily to the good 2007 yellow perch hatch in the Western Basin.
Remember, this is A PROPOSAL ONLY, and must go through required public hearings and a public comment period prior to be approved by Ohio's Wildlife Council.
The 2008/2009 regulations on the Canadian side of St Clair River, Lake St Clair, Detroit River and all of Lake Erie set the limits for a sportsman license at 6 walleye, 50 yellow perch and 5 Rainbows/Steelhead (open all year, no size limits). There are a few exception in Lake Erie which are protected spawning grounds. Two rods per angler are allowed in Lake Erie (except Rondeau Bay)and Lake St Clair, but, only one rod per angler in the St Clair and Detroit rivers. This is taken right out of the Ministry of Natural Resources publication called "Fishing Ontario 2008/2009". Hope this helps anyone planning to fish Canadian waters.
Cobra. am I reading that corect you can fish walleye now on lake erie with 2 rods per person? I know it use to be that you could only use 2 rods per if you were fishing for steelhead. I hope this is true, if so I will be doing alot more walleye fishing this year on the queens side.
Draggenballs, two rods per angler on Erie and St Clair. I would post a picture of the page that the regulations are on, but I haven't purchased a wheel so I'm not allowed to post pics. Actually, I just picked up the new regulator booklet at the Ultimate Fishing Show in Novi, a couple of weeks ago. I have been asking for one at all the local places here in Ontario, but I had to go to Michigan to get one. How ironic, however it was at one of the Ontario fishing charter booths.
thats cool!! I was hoping that they would open that up. so I am guessing I can muskie fish St Clair now with two rods also. Its going to be a good year! Thanks.
Draggonballs, muskie fishing runs from 1st Saturday in June to Dec. 15. You are allowed to keep one one a sportsman's license. The keeper must be greater than 112 cm (44"). Two rods allowed.
Q8: What are the main changes to angling on Lake Erie-Lake St Clair
(Zone 19)?
A: Two lines per licensed fisher may now be used when angling from a boat
in open water in Lake St. Clair as well as Lake Erie to be consistent with
American waters and promote tourism.
As long as I can remember, we've been allowed 2 rods per angler in Lake Erie. I'm not sure of St.Clair as I don't fish there very often. It was either last year or the year before (getting old, memory going) that the walleye season didn't open until the 2nd or 3rd week in May for sport fishermen. The commercial guys were allowed to catch them as soon as they could get their boats on the lake in the spring. This year it is open all year.
really, well I can tell ya first had that the law was 1 rod per person. I crossed the Michigan - Ontario line once in a friends boat and got a ticket for to many rods in the water. we had to go to leamington to get are rods back and pay the 100 per fine. That was 2006. I knew the law then but did not realize we were over the border until the nice CO cam along and let us know. The problem I had was the gps in my friends boat still says we were still in Michigan water but the nice CO could not care less. Lesson learned! don't always trust your map overlay on your gps. We both had are Ontario license.
that was on lake Erie, we were fishing walleye north east of stony point. As I sayed I knew we were close to the border but the gps showed us in Michigan water. Later we compared the gps map overlay to a chart and the gps was off by about a 1/4 mile.
Stony point on lake Erie is the northern most tip of Brest Bay. Ferme Nuclear Plant in Monroe is on stony point. Its a real popular place in the spring up close to the point. As the water temp rises the fish move deeper out into Ohio and Ontario water. Its also a popular spot in the fall for perch. I will be spending more time this spring in the Holiday Beach area and then Peely Island. Thanks again for the heads up.
Thanks, I just learned something new. On a clear day we can see the Fermi plant from Leamington, well at least, the steam column that the cooler puts out anyway. When you fish places like Holiday Beach and Pelee Island, do you trailer the boat to a launch close to those areas or do you run in the boat from a Mich. launch sight. Just curious because of the price of fuel. From Leamington, where I am, to Ontario waters at the mouth of the Detroit River would be quite a run in the boat.
I do both, but the last few trips I have just drove the boat over. If I have 3 guys helping pay for gas its not as bad as messing around at the bridge. Last year I took a nice trip from the Detroit river all the way to Wheatley. That was an adventure. Thanks for the spelling of Pelee! man I could not think of how that was spelled I knew I had it wrong but could not think of it!!!. My spelling is the worst.
