Might be going there for a long weekend in the summer to catch some smallies!! Any pointers on where to stay and where the fishihg is good if coming from jersey? A place on the water with a dock would be optimal!! Thanks!

I'm out one Erie about 6 to 10 days a month, spring, summer (until aug. then its salmon time on lake Michigan) and back again in the fall for perch and walleye. I have ben fishing Erie for about 20 years. Michigan, Ohio and Ontario water.
I fish the detroit river in the early spring for the pre spawn monsters and the main lake for the numbers in the summer. I travel from the Grand Rapids area, actually Wayland Mi. and it is like running the gauntlet but I find that it is worth it.
pastaman1234, in Erie, PA, there's some decent motels just before the entrance of Presque Isle State Park. A amusement park and waterpark are adjacent, for the family. I believe the state park has a ramp fee, all other ramps are free(city shoreline). Good luck with a place on the water. Largemouth are good around the peninsula, not sure about the smallies.

The river was my bag in the early spring at one time also. That was until I found out about Turtle Island in Ohio Give that area a try sometime in the spring. Drift and casting/jig blade baits!!! No need for a bow mount. just a drift sock and much smaller crowds.
I've made the "commute from hell" once-a-year starting in '97(haven't made the last 3). Towing a boat thru Chicago and Gary gives a whole new meaning to "road-rage". We've stayedon Put-in-bay a bunch and wet-slippedwest of the islands. Erie's a hard call when trying to plan a roadtrip. Flexibility's the key as lake conditions are so weather related.
The last time I was there was right after a nasty nor-east'er and the West Basin was "chocolate milk" so we had to run north to the river which was clear but full of grass. A run over to the islands produced better water& fish.
It's "always" been an adventure, good fishing and challenging experiences.

Lake Erie Charter Captain here. Look for the the Eye Hooker out of Wild Wings in the spring and Vermillion in the fall. Happy to share information with fellow THTer's.
I fish Lake Erie out of Ashtabula, Ohio. Have a dock and a camper at ARU marina on the Ashtabula river.
The walleye fishing has been great last few years and jumbo perch as well.
Pastaman1234, lots of good smallmouth fishing in that area also. Can rent a dock for the week or by the month at our marina. They also have campsites if you have a camper or tent.
I fish the west end in the spring then go to Ashtabula around middle of june. Hope to read alot about fishing Lake Erie on this new regional forum.
I fish out of the Canadian side. Usually Erieau, some Leamington, some Port Glasgow and once in a while at Long Point. Waters great for rainbow and walleye. Let's keep this Great Lakes Section going. Waiting for spring. Dwain
Pennsylvania Lake Erie boater here. Launch out of Lampe. Fish for smallies in the spring, Walleye, Steelies, and Perch in the summer. Back in the 90's, I kept my boat in Ohio. Conneuat for a few years, then Geneva-on-the-lake. Even launched out of ARU once tamos (I live south of you down here in Plum Boro, PA)
Pastaman, I recommend fishing for smallies in May. At least that's when I catch my biggest fish. 20 inchers are common. Tube gigs, or trolling crankbaits. I ussually start in 25 foot of water and adjust my depth from there. I drive up and back in the same day, or (in the summer time) I rent a transient slip at Wolverine marina. Hotels in Erie, well there are alot of them, but it seems anything clean is $100 a night. There's one near the entrance to Presque Isle (can't remember the name, but it has "Choo Choo's" bar in it) that's cheaper, but it isn't as nice as the others.

Though based in Lake St. Claire, I make it to Lake Erie at least twice a year to hit PIB and/or walleye. I do it mainly for the trip, not because I'm a hardcore fisherman.
Walleye fishing 3 days/mo. beginning in May - July.
6 fish limit starting in May dictates this starting month.
4 hr. trip from Southeast Ohio (Gallipolis).

Hi Draggenballs: The steelhead fishing has been great during the last couple of years since owning my boat. Have not fished out of Wheatly, but plan on giving it a try this year. Take care. Dwain
