Default Live Bait

Hello,

I just started fishing in Pompano Beach off my new boat. I've been trying to find good spots to catch live bait because buying at $2 bucks a pop is a little ridiculous. I tried chumming both at night and early morning by the Hillsboro inlet buoy to no avail. If anyone can give me some pointers I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Andrew

Up here off the St. Lucie inlet, the greenies have been in 30-35 feet of water.

I usually just look for the other fishing boats; if there aren't any around, I watch the birds. That's about all I can offer.

$2.00 pop- I assume you mean Pilchards. Gog's are running over $60/doz (if not more). As the old saying goes- early in the morning, "if you chum, they will come" but somtimes they are just not there.

Best bet- head to the Hillsboro pier before dawn, anchor at one of the shallow reefs (you will see a few boats there) and start chumming. Probably not get any pilchards, but bound to get a few blue runners and if you are lucky- a gog or two.

HI,

AT this time of year, you can find plenty of pilchards in boca inlet. Bring a sabiki or a cast net and you will get all you need

I've been hearing boca is the place for live bait. Any particular time of day? Is chumming necessary?

Yeah be careful. It often gets a little nerve wracking in the inlet . On an incoming tide, they can often be caught right outside the inlet which is a lot easier to deal with. Also you can go to the park by car and catch plenty from the seawall.
