Default Two boats busted in Cay Sal

This was briefly mentioned in the Wahoo thread, but I think it is important enough to be its own thread. Two boats were busted for fishing in Cay Sal yesterday for not checking in as required. I am told that one boat is a charter boat (sportfish) out of Islamorada and the other is a center console. These boats were seen being towed behind a Bahamian cutter presumably to Nassau. Not sure if any of the people on the boats were arrested or if the boats were just confiscated.

Just not worth it and they are stepping up enforcement. I got real close to being in the Bahamian waters this year out of Marathon. I also got flanked by the USCG cutter as we were right on the line of the EEZ. We then got a routine inspection from a USCG safe boat just as we cleared the reef that day on the way in. I doubt it was a coincidence.

I wish there was a way to get a Bahamian permit to go to Cay Sal from the Keys. Many times I'd have my boat down in the Keys and would love to hit Cay Sal on my way back north. Was not going to take the risk like these guys apparently did.

As far as I know, to be legal you need to first go to one of the ports of entry first, not real convenient.

The Bahamians could have an officer issuing permits from stateside and maybe charge an extra fee to compensate. Could be a win/win.

The charter who take clients fishing illegally or the guy who warns potential customers?

It'll be public knowledge soon enough it the boat has been impounded. Why try to protect him?

The asshole douche is the guy talking shit about other people's private or semiprivate misfortunes, legal or otherwise, on a public forum.

I won't judge the charter guy.

You got to have dirty laundry before it can be aired.

It won't be long before everyone will know. Dock talk is faster than the WWW.

I suspect these guys are in a bunch of trouble and could possibly lose their boats. It was no big deal back in the late 70's and early 80's. Way to much emphasis on Homeland security these days to fool around with crossing borders without being cleared. I'm sure the list of charges can range from US to Bahamian laws that were broken. Not good.

Try going into Mexico and go fishing and then run the boat back to US waters without following procedure. There is no difference other than the distance if they catch you.

Haha. If the boat had paying customers on it that were taken into custody on a Bahamian ship and hauled off to Nassau I bet you they'd have a different opinion.
