Fill out the paperwork before you cross, and take a 12 pack of Bud light for Cisco at BGC.

Easy trip for you. Get your passport, sign up for the SVRS and read through the last few years of postings on this blog. You will find check lists and all kinds of advice, When you get ready to go, post your dates on the calendar and start watching the weather.

On the calendar, is there a way to hide the birthdays?

Thanks,

Jeff

What's up Bimini 2017. Let me comment how great a forum Hull Truth is due to all the (constructive) contributions from people like you. I have never been to the Bahamas. I have been fishing offshore Charleston SC for about 10 years. I have have trailered my boat down to the keys before, but have always found excuses as to why I don't have time for this trip. It's ON this year. I felt like for the first time Abacos might be too much, so I will get my feet wet with Bimini.

I have a house reserved on a canal in South Bimini May 27 - June 3rd. We will be driving down to Harbor Town the day before, fueling up, and taking care of last minute provisions. I would have rather avoided the holiday weekend but one of my crew is flying over from Europe for this trip had already booked his flights around this time window. So memorial day week it is.

Safety wise I have:
- Life Raft
- 2 PLBs
- 2 Handhelds / 2 Primary VHFs
- Delorme
- Medkit and Toolbox
- Chain / Cable lock to lock my boat to the dock (I learned the hard way here this summer when some punk kid untied my boat from a dock on a flood tide while I was at a concert ... boated into the concert. Was a horrible night, but got the boat off and nobody was injured) Cable lock from now on anytime my boat is in the water and I am not around to watch it.

One of my crew happens to be one of the most handy guys I know who re-builds boats on the side. The kind of guy that can fix anything. He also happens to be one of the best fisherman I know. So from a safety perspective I KNOW we are good.

Being that it was 30 degrees the past few days here in Charleston, I have been lurking these threads day dreaming about this trip, watching your videos, taking notes (literally), and randomly happening upon some numbers once and a while (thanks). Anyhow have any suggestions on what fishing chart to purchase in order to identify some good ledges. Is hot spot for this area any good? If anyone wants to share some local knowledge on a lobster or conch spot or two, that would be appreciated, but I recognize that may be too big an ask. Otherwise we will troll some divers behind the boat. Excited to fish the ledge of Cat Kay, Gingerbread, and Issacs area. Any other recommendations for a must do / see.

Some questions for the forum:
- I will be leaving from Harbor Town. How is the inlet there? I thought I read somewhere that at dead low using the ramps at Harbor Town aren't possible? So be sure to avoid dead low.
- For people who have done this trip and want to leave early, is it advisable that you reserve a slip ahead of time for one night through the marina so that you can get the boat in the water the day before and load up - OR rather splash the boat really early (4-5 am) so that you can clear the inlet at sunrise. Is the marina even open then?
- If there happens to be moderate wind (10-12 kt) once you get over there (assuming you were able to make the crossing), how chopped up does running on the bank typically get. Basically, can you still get away with comfortably running over to Gingerbread or will a moderate wind keep you close to N. and S. Bimini?
- Being that I'm staying at a house on S. Bimini, is the best place to clear customs still the Big Game Club?
- I will review a paper chart, but will my Garmin 4212 internal map be accurate enough to confidently navigate some of the skinnier water over there, such as some of the cuts and channels, and anywhere else for that matter where running aground becomes a hazard. I think my buddy has the blue chart chip for this area, but that remains to be seen.
- Is it pretty easy to spin up to N. Bimini by boat to grab dinner. What marina offers dingy rates and what would I typically look to pay for a few hours?

I'm sure I will have some other questions for the group as planning continues. Please feel free to continue to share your knowledge of the area, tips, and hazards. I plan to seek the contact info from some others who will be doing the crossing on the same day closer to the dates. Feel free to PM me with your contact details and I will build a roster of vessels who plan to leave the same day for safety sake / radio contact.

Everyone do me a favor and pray to your weather gods and the big guy upstairs for calm winds for the crossing days and the days in between. Hope to see you on the other side!!

Chris
Great questions. There helping me also.

No unfortunately not, I made the suggestion to use it too help people look for buddy boats when planning to cross. It was not designed for that purpose but is very useful.
As said earlier sign up for SVRS, it's easy and free and makes your return check in very easy

I have a friend that is looking to do his first trip over this summer. He has smaller cruiser and was looking to just stay aboard for 4 days. Do any of the marinas have shower facilities?

Ahhh how i miss running to the island and around there! Hopefully we can set up some dates this summer and head out again! A THT caravan would be NICE! My 23' Contender and all 5 of us made it easily last time so anyone wondering if it's a bad trip it really isn't. Just drive the boat east for an hour and a half and your there. Stay away from the bluewater resort though, it's worse than a jail..

Does anyone have a good checklist they like to use?
