I remember the first year that we had traps we were checking them every 3-5 days at first, that gets old fast and we have a good system now and the worst part of it all is bringing the nasty traps back home at the end of e season.
2 weeks!? That's far to long

way to long. one week max, and only if you put in fresh pigs feet. fish would not last two weeks. if the crabs run out of food they have two options: eat each other, or find/make a way out, which trust me, they will.

I get 2-3weeks of bait with a single pig feet. When it's colder, and there are fewer fish on the grass flats, it might last a much as 4 weeks. I usually check mine weekly but if I can't get out there, two weeks is still plenty of time.

140 traps for one trapper is nothing, many of them down here have THOUSANDS of traps. I still get all the crab I want.

That is not a fact, that is your opinion. I have experimented with different baits and lengths of time between harvest and I will continue to do it my way. We harvested over 400 claws last season out of 10 traps so I must be dong something right.

Where do y'all get your traps? I'm just looking for 1 or two for my dock, and can only seem to find 5 packs online.

I bought the online 5 pack deals but you can probably find them on Craigslist. I think a lot of people buy them for an easy stone crab source and then the thrill of pulling a 40lb nasty stinky trap every week or so quickly fades and the traps sit in a corner of their yard until hey are sold at a yard sale or on Craigslist .

How do you compare the taste of this stone crab to king crab?

Got 11 claws on Sunday. Hope it gets better after a few fronts. Going to try for some snook tonight.

Do you only eat the claws? Are you removing the claws from the crab and throwing them back?

Sorry for the dumb questions, we are blue crab crabbers up here in MD.

Yes generally people only take one claw so the crab can recoup faster. It will survive and is legal to take both claws if they are legal size, but it makes it a lot harder for the crab to grow its claws back.

Most people will remove only the one bigger claw... It's legal to remove both if they're legal in size but you really don't want to hurt the little buggers... They'll keep on growing new claws and they'll keep on getting trapped in your traps... If you remove both claws the critter will have a problem feeding itself and growing new claws...

I was at the dump a year ago, and some guy threw away 5 perfectly good traps! Not only did I get them for free, I saved a couple bucks on the weight!

I love the dump.

The last study that was done, taking two claws vs 1 increased mortality by less than 10%. Almost negligible.

Maybe so... I'll never take another person's last cigarette nor would I consider taking his means to make a living and/or defend themselves... So I'll just continue to take the one big claw...
