RE: Florida Keys - Where can you keep your boat if you live there, but not on the water? I live in Key Colony Beach which is next to Marathon. Marinas and storage yards do exist throughout the Keys but they are being bought out and converted into private "dockaminiums or rackaminiums" at an alarming rate. With these new outfits you need to "purchase" your slip or rack space and then also pay a very high monthly maintenance fee. Additionally, because you have purchased "real" property you must now pay land taxes. I suggest you tour/visit the part of the Keys that you are interested. Have a backup plan ready for when your marina decides to throw you out. Here in Marathon alone this has happened with: Marathon Marina (now Cay Clubs), Grassy Key Marina, Duck Key Marina, and the Boat House. In water slips and rack spaces are running about $120-140,000 each plus a couple of hundred per month maintenance.
Now that I have scared the hell out of you- there is in water dockage and rack storage running about $8-15/foot/month. Good luck, the average guy is being pushed out. |
