Default Heading to Jekyll Island at the end of the month...

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking forward to spending a week down there. I have few questions about the area...

I'd like to toss out a crabpot or two while I'm down there. Is there any registration stuff I need to do before tossing a crabpot? Any fishing licenses required for coastal fishing?

For a family with little kids on a little runabout, would you suggest spending more time exploring Jekyll Sound or St Simons Sound? We like to fish, look for shells, look for critters in the marsh, hopefully see some dolphin, etc.

What the air temp and water temp like the last week of March?

Thanks for any feedback.

The weather should be nice, probably highs in the 60'. I have never had a licence to crab before, but that doesn't mean it is not required. Look at the regs online and see. Using crab traps is fun, but a crab net with the kids is awesome! Just a net, chicken neck and time on the dock. I will never forget those days.

As to the sounds, make sure you either use a good bottomfinder and chart or use some GPS mapping software. Show going, is the rule. Our marshes get shallow quick and "big water" can be shallow also. Be careful and have fun!

You will see plenty of dolphins in the sound, between the "Jeykell" ( as the locals call it) pier and the SSI pier. When you see them idle over then beat on the side of your boat with your hand. Their a couple of pods that will put on a good show if their in the mood.
Fishing wise there are to big towers on the southside of SSI that you can catch flounder, trout, and reds. if they not biteing their go just north and east of the SSI pier you will see alot of boats anchored whiting fishing, you can usually where them out. Make sure you have half once- 2 1/2 once weights because the current can rip at times.
If you see boats fishing these locations don't be scared to pull up in the area. These are well known spots that get fished frequently.
Good Luck

Edit: Most of the Good resturants are on SSI. You must check out the Crab Trap it is kid friendly and great sea food.
you will need a fishing license.
Fill free to ask any specifics.

It was 80-84 over the last week and the water temp is rising fairly quickly here in Savannah. Don't need license to crab, but if you put out crab traps (not hand lines or baskets), you need a green bouy to signify you are a recreational crabber and not commercial. Chicken is fine, but cut fish works as good or better and does not stink like your worst nightmare when you pull the traps. Good luck.

Dude, the weather should be great. If you want to crab, nets on the SSI pier have been producing all winter. Was out there the other day and two guys had about 1.5 five gallon buckets full in about three hours. The Black Sea Bass will still be around if you have a calm day to get out to the reefs (2 to 10 miles off). Some cut squid and the kids will have a blast. Hands down the easiest fishing to do, go to one of the reefs, find some bottom relief and anchor. Catch. If you have any questions PM me.

msumoose and all,

Thanks for the replies and insight into the area. We just got back yesterday and we had a blast.

It's a good thing I got a day job though... If it were a couple of hundred years ago and I had to provide for my family by hunting and fishing we'd starve!... probably improve the gene pool

We saw plenty of dolphin putting on quite a show. My son swears he saw a manatee... can't vouch for it; but, there was plenty of excitement in his eyes.

Thanks again guys.
