Default Verizon Coverage in Bahamas (Grand Bahama / Port Lucaya)

Curious to know if anyone has information or insight into using a Verizon cell phone in Freeport (specifically Port Lucaya). Please share any info regarding coverage (if any).

Thanks in advance!

I believe Verizon uses CDMA technology and most of the rest of the world is using GSM. Verizon does sell a joint CDMA/GSM phone that you could use. Cingular is a good company if you need international roaming.

Batelco is analog, TDMA digital and GSM. Cingular works fine over there.

Unless you have a tri-mode (analog 850, digital 850, digital 1900) Verizon phone, you are out of luck.

Default verizon coverage

[verizons coverage is good in freeport just make sure you call them

and set up a overseas account on your plan that will bring the by

minute rate down to 45 cents a minute instead of 250 and it only cost

3.99 a month and when you come back just suspend the service if you

arent going to use it

Cingular/AT&T work well. Set up Skype if your going to be there awhile. Heck of alot cheaper. Two cents a minute.

I've never had much luck with cell phones over there - when they do work, the roaming charges will blow your mind. I just buy a BALTELCO phone card and use the pay phones to phone home - if anyone needs to reach me, they just leave a message with my wife or on my machine. Primitive, but cheap and effective.

last year I was there and had no problem in Port Lucaya using my blackberry curve with Verizon service. I don't remember much if any roaming charges at all either...

I have a Batelco SIM card that I put in my unlocked ATT phone. I think if your contract with Verizon is over 2 years, you can ask them for the unlock code. Then possibly your verizon will work with a Batelco SIM.
