Though I feel a little awkward asking this, what are the pros and cons about taking a shot gun to the bahamas? I plan on running over 3 or 4 times. Also, any advise on what the legal requirements are for here and/or there on having a shot gun aboard my boat? This info would be most helpful. Thanks in advance
I am 99% sure you are allowed to take a firearm to the Bahamas, as long as you declare it at Customs and KEEP IT ON YOUR BOAT. To be able to take it ashore, you must get a permit from the Bahamian Gov.
Go to Bahamas.com and find out all kinds of info. You can take one, have it on your boat, but there are requirements to follow. Anyway, The web site is useful and has a phone# for help.
It has to be in a locked compartment on the boat and you have to declare the serial # along with the type and quantity of ammo on the customs forms. There's a fairly long thread on the FS forum about guns on boats. My first 10 or so trips to the Abacos I took a gun, no longer feel the need since it's safer there than in Florida. Your location may warrant it though. If I was going to Bimini or Lucaya I would be armed, but I usually won't go places where I feel that need.

Most important thing to remember:
Be sure to declare the exact number of rounds you have.
Do not succumb to the temptation of "popping off" a few rounds on a slow fishing day.
If you get stopped and your # doesn't match the # on your cruising permit get ready to be a guest of the Bahamian Govt..
Last I heard they don't house you at the Hilton while awaiting your hearing.

Really?! Gonna have to write that one down, thanks!
Anthem - 3/12/2006 9:05 PM Oh, where do you get the "cruising permit" from??
You get it when you clear in at Customs and Immigration. If they do not mention it, then you should mention it to them. The firearm HAS to be listed on the Cruising Permit, even though you may not be cruising anywhere other than the location you cleared into.
