Default St. Petersburg area help

I will be down in the St. Petersburg area in mid February for work and am trying to scope out fishing opportunities for either offshore or inshore light tackle/fly fishing. I will be in the St. Pete Beach area. Anyone have any information on guides/charters or is the area do-it-yourself at all?

thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

I live on St. Pete Beach. If you want the best guide around give Capt. Doug Hemmer a call. This guy is a local legand. Or if you want to go the less expensive route when you get into town you can go up to John's Pass in Treasure Island (one town North), they have 1/2 day and full day group trips. Another one is in St. Pete Beach down in Pass-A-Grill at the Mary Pier, they also have the same day trips available. Good luck !

Thanks guys. How is the fishing in February? No tarpon I guess, so is it mainly snook, trout and reds?

jeff,

Depending on temp's and if our weather stays as mild as it has so far, and on a warm, calm day small tarpon are possible in the backcountry. Our big fish start to show up in May...again maybe earlier depending on water temp's. Snook are plentiful as are redfish.

Hope this helps and safe travels.
