Default BoatUS vs Sea Tow - Miami

I've seen all the threads on the pros and cons of each and also seen a lot of comments that say you should ask people in the area about their experiences becasue a lot could differ based on location.

I'm going to be going out primarily of Matheson and the grove and I know that Sea Tow has their operations right there next to Scotty's..I'm not sure where BoatUS is located but based on what I've read over all on each I was leaning towards BoatUS..

How have your experiences with each been in this area and is there one reccomened over the other?

Thanks

Boat US without a doubt.

I have heard horror stories about Sea Tow. And many came from a former Sea Tow captain.

Sea Tow is known for padding the bill and not telling you until its time for them to unhook your boat. Then you get a bill in the thousands. They are masters at turning an ordinary assistance call or tow into a "salvage" where they claim the right to a percentage of your boats value. And wont release your boat until they have payment.

The guy I know who was a Sea Tow captain quit because he didn't like they way they do business.

I've been with Boat US since 1987 and have never had a problem with them. Get their highest coverage and it will even cover your from your dock to the marina should you break down.

Default I was aTowboat/US Captain

In Florida...but I quit because I dont like the way they do buisness .After extricating a Sailboat that was hung-up under a drawbridge........the boss told me to charge Salvage Rates. In this case $3700.
The Boatowner told him he can just have the boat/come get it. A couple weeks later, after realizing he was not going to get the Salvage Rate ,the boss billed the Member`s card for 6 hrs. of towing....
They both do it......right or wrong.

TowBoat US. I have had them for 8 yrs and used they twice. Was very pleased both times.

They usually have a boat sitting on the south side of Key Biscayen and I know they have stationed boats out of Haulover and out of Black Pt.

Boat US.

I launch out of Bayfront a lot and they have boats there. They also have them go by Elliot key often. Had to use them Twice in 2009 and they were great. Get the best package and the trailer add-on for $10.00.

We have an excellent Sea Tow service here BUT Sea Tow has had some rough press from a Corporate standpoint. So I've carried both from last year until now but going forward upon renewal I will probably just use Boat US.

Beyond the typical reasons are that Boat US puts quite a bit of effort into ongoing communications via news letters and magazines. And from what I understand, they are paid for each tow which provides operators an incentive to go out and tow rather than spend too much time trying to figure out if it's needed or not. They also have a deal with Spot Messenger where you can have a single-call-for-service-button on the device. That in itself has been nearly enough to go all Boat US.

Been with Boat US for 8 years, used them plenty of times up in NJ and south Fl and never had a problem of any kind with them. Always ready to assist with a jump, gas or tow in any condition. I cary the towing plan also for another $15.00 and had to use it once on the hyway, they sent a tow truck, loaded up my truck and hooked up the boat and took both back to the house, also have the SPOT that can get them if out of radio range. I would not think of changing to the other guys

I decided to go with BoatUS and have had them for a couple months. I was out at Boca Chita yesterday and had flooded the engine and there was a BoatUS guy there in the harbor. He gladly came over (not even knowing I had BoatUS) and offered to take a look and help. He was super friendly, knowledgeable, and got it started right up in two minutes. Just based on that one experience I'm glad I went with BoatUS
