Random Quote: In theory, practice and theory are the same, but in practice they are diffrent. (Larry McVoy)
Hey Jacob what will it run now its working right? I actually got to go up last Saturday for a birthday party on one of the LLI houseboats. A good time was had by all! Really nice sunset!
So what are they going to do with all the rain over the last week? According to the COE site this morning the low for Sept. was 9/14 or last Monday. The level was 1064.22. As of Saturday (9/19) the level was 1064.62 or an increase of 5 inches.
There has to be a serious lag in the reporting. i bet the lake itself has had 5" of rain on the surface over the last week. Hope there is a big increase when they post today's level and over the next few days. Certainly they had to put the plug in to help with the flooding.
Yeah looks like my prediction was way off. My brother drove across dam this morning and the sign registered 1066. something. He did say it looked like they were releasing water. That would be a surprise.
They are releasing bare minimum that they always release. Not sure why they always have to release some, but they have a bare minimum that they always do.
Fishing? Fishing? I am more concerned about my little piece of beach on the island near your cove where I hang out. At 1070 the fire pit will be under water....I'll have to start tying up at your dock...
As of 2:15 today the lake is at 1066.58. It is up one foot today so far with more to come.
I am worried about getting home from work today. Sounds like it is getting pretty rough out there with flooding and road closures.
I imagine the creeks will be very stained from the run-off, could slow fishing down in the creeks. The Stripers will head out of the creek/creek mouths and move further into the main channel.. just a guess. I hope to have a chance to test my theory once it stops raining.
Our next door neighbors had a boat go down during the rain. My brother went by to check on his boat and saw the neighbors boat tied to the dock with the stern down n older Seaand the bow pointing straight up. This boat, a Sea Ray Pachanga maybe 27', had only been tird to their dock for a couple of weeks. We do not have their number to call them. Wish we did.
By the rain gauge at my house in Sandy Springs, close to 10" since I emptied it at 7:00 last night.
My basement had 10" of water in it....spent 5 hours pumping it out. I emptied the shop vac 91 times...thats almost 1100 gallons of water. And I live up on a hill...
Here's to hoping for a disaster declaration...I do not have flood insurance.
I'd be real careful out on the lake in the days to come...there will likely be a ton of logs, junk, etc...floating in the lake.
Brian - Sorry to hear about your basement, Our neighbor went to HD and Lowes yesterday to buy a shop vac and both were sold out. They ended up borrowing mine. Knock on wood we do not have a water problem in our basement. BTW, the shop vac I have has a threaded drain on the bottom you can attach a garden hose to. It sure saves the 91 trips to empty.
I may run up to the lake house at lunch today just to check on things. Sure we will have some problem. My boat should be fine in the boathouse. Dock is secured and should handle the raising water if the hinges do not fail.
And I second the warning about the deadheads. In 40 years at the lake the only accident I have had was hitting a 4x4 after a big rain event. Cracked the hull of an old Proline I had. Floating just below the surface.
Parthary, I am very sorry to hear about the flooding in you basement. What a mess. Good luck with it.
I think the COE will start dumping water once everything dries out a bit. I don’t think there will be enough storage capacity for the spring rains. So, well everyone is excited about the lake being up, this is the wrong time of the year for the lake to be up, so they will have to lower it again just as fast as they can.
Can you imagine the mess they would have had if this had hit while the lake was full.
Have you guys seen the lake level at Alatoona? It is 10 feet over full. There is a lot of damage going on there.
West Point Dam is the real concern right now though. That lake is over full and there is much more water coming. I remember a few years back where they were worried about the dam bursting because it was overfull. I think it will be a big concern again now. They have the dam open now as far as it will go, but the water level is still rising down there. It will be interesting to see how it goes. If that dam goes, kiss our water good bye for sure.
I was up to the lake yesterday and had to move my dock up the bank as my new wheel assembly on my ramp was half submerged. Easiest move ever. Really glad I sprung for the wheels this year as I have wrestled that ramp for 15 years and it has always been a real major pain to lift and move. Not any more. Also, took the boat out of the water to get it ready for my trip to the Chesapeake Bay. Somehow, the rains let up exactly when I was performing that evolution so I had a nice little boat trip on the lake. Brian, sorry to hear about your flooded basement. I'm on hill also but it never even occured to me to look in my basement. So, after reading your note, I went down to check it and it was dry.

Not a chance of carrying that thing 91 times to the outside....I did empty it 91 times though.
I built a levee out of firewood outside the back door....then set the shop vac up on an overturned milk crate and fired it up. It filled up within 15 seconds...after which I unscrewed the drain and let it run out over the levee into the yard...
I see a french drain in my future....anyone ever built one?
Might basement used to leak after every major rain storm. It really made the basement unusable and was ruining the drywall.
I had one of those dry basement companies come in and install a gutter system under the wall and a sump pump. I have not had a problem since. They had to jack hammer in the basement and it made a real mess, but it was worth it. My basement is carpeted now and is my man cave. I have absolutely no issues with it now.
I headed out last Sat mid-day looking for stripers, never found a school - just singles on my fishfinder, after searching 6 mile, 2 mile, mud and flat creeks, I headed down to Young Deer and finally ran into some fish... dropped down some live bluebacks - had one nailed but no hookup and the fish were gone... like ghosts.. i never relocated them. Anchored up in a cove and had a swim a few cold beverages... and called it a day.
Did you catch the hearing or buy them? How are hearing caught?
Brian, I'm working near you if I remember right. I'm off 400 and Northridge. I'd be glad to stop by after work and look at the situation. I have had to deal with quite a few french drains, underground springs, etc. working on some of the homes we built. Let me know if I can help.
Brian, sorry to hear about your basement flooding. I can relate. My prev house in Marietta had the basement flood several times. It didn't take a 200 year flood just a good hard rain. Like Lakebum, I had a basement waterproofing company come out - jackhammer up the inside perimiter and install gutters and a big tank w/sump pump. Never had an ounce of water in that basement again.
Hey Brian, So sorry about your basement. Prior to our remodel 4 years ago we used Trotter to waterproof the basement. Not cheap, but the peace of mind we have has been really nice. Not ONE DROP in the basement with this 100 year rainfall. I do have to say though I've never heard the sump pump cycle as frequently as it did - every 20 seconds at one point - usually it's about every 5 to 15 minutes with heavy sustained rainfall! Anyway, feel free to call me about it. I'll be glad to show you what was done.
Hope you can work something out with the disaster declaration. Glad you and your family are ok. We had a neighbor who had a HUGE oaktree go down - luckily it didnt hit the house. If it had, it would have leveled the top floor. It was really scary for lots of folks.
