You know the one of the fun parts of driving around in a classic glass boats is getting stories just like yours Bob. I cannot tell you how many times I have been fueling up and have people walk up and start telling a story about how they grew up skiing behind one, fishing one, or jsut cruising one. The red one on the end is mine, and has the bullet proof 120 in it. runs about 38 or so, and is jsut plain fun and simplistic to drive. No electronics, no fuel injection, just a good classic boat.
There is something special about cruising with common boats built over 30 years ago, be it Whalers, Larson, or Aristocrafts.
Take it easy guys
Scott

I think the electronics on the Larson were limited to the nav lights and blower. It was the standard layout with two fold down seats and two jump seats at the stern. If I remember correctly our performance numbers were just below yours in the mid 30's. But that was on the old style pitot tube so who knows what it was. Pulled a ton of skiers with it but we were all much "smaller" then. I remember once on the 4th of July skiing non-stop with a buddy from Brown's Bridge back to Gunter's (Lanier Harbour). Try doing that today. The traffic and waves would kill you.
Yea you got that right. Not only have we gotten larger, so have the boats!!! 19 feet back then was a great good size boat..... in the 50's 14 feet was..

Angie and I spent last week in Jupiter and had a couple nice offshore fishing days. Lost a beautiful Bull dolphin boatside when i tried to gaff him. I don't know how the gaff didn't stick in him, i yanked it very hard directly into his side - but it sort of deflected off him and he took off taking the 40lb test line right across the bimini top frame and broke the line.
The day wasnt a total loss as we ran into a nice pod of porpoises and they put on a great show - doing jumps like you would see at sea world. It's the first time I have seen them jump with their entire body out of the water other than at Sea world or on TV. We also saw tons of crabs swimming on the surface about 3 miles offshore. There was a patch about a half mile wide with tons of these palm-sized crabs all over the place. Has anyone seen this before? That's another first for me.
Losing that dolphin was definitely a bummer. I just handled it wrong. I handed Angie the rod so I could tend the gaff - and she was standing too far back from the gunnel so the rod tip was not out over the gunnel. When I didn't gaff the fish properlly, he took off taking the line across the bimini top frame. I definitely learned a lesson that day - KEEP THE ROD TIP OUT OVER THE GUNNEL!
I was too chicken to try wrapping the wire leader around my hand and hoisting him over - thought he might take my hand off if he made a good run.
Merry Christmas to all the Lake Lanier crowd. Hope you have a great Holiday Season.
Anyone plan to be out on the lake over the Holidays? I plan to watch the weather and hope for a couple of nice days to get up and play around on the lake. Most likely sometime during the week of the 28th. Maybe try a little fishing.
Looks like Wednesday tickets are $5 and the rest of the days are $9. Another site I saw said there were discount coupons at Subways.
Not sure what day / days I am going down. Probably will go on Saturday with Robby as he is coming down from Clemson to go. Likely will also go either Wednesday or Thursday.
Yeah I agree with Parthery - the show is gonna be lean on the saltwater side. I called Grady and they confirmed to me that there will be NO Grady White participation at the ATL show this year. They said their dealers seem to be concentrating on the bigger, more coastal-oriented shows - at least for this year anyway. I'm think I'm going to skip the show this year.
Hello, everyone. Long time no post, sorry about that. I will be unavailable for the boat show also. The Atlanta Saltwater Sportsmans Club is having their annual sailfish tourney Wed. thru Sat. next week in WPB and I will be going down for it. It has been a slack year for boating and fishing for me, I hope everyone is doing well.
Just figured out that the email notices that I normally get when someone posts on the Lake Lanier THT thread doesn't work and I had become so dependent on it that I stopped going to the THT site without it. Good to hear Bo is up and about catching fish again. I am passing on the show this year as I can't think of anything that I need just now. Bought a lot of dock and boating stuff last year so I am giving my wallet a chance to recover and I don't want to be tempted. Bob, you can represent us and give us a report. Harv

Certainly ready to get out on the lake, but it seems like something comes up every weekend. The couple of times I have made it up the weather sucked. You know the weather didn't used to bother me as much as it seems to now. Price of getting older. But I think February will have more opportunities for me.
I think the new Hammonds is supposed to open on Feb 1. Sure they will have a "soft" opening before that. From what I have read, the store is supposed to have an expanded area with boat stuff. That will be something that is really needed on the Cumming side.
Well they are already open actually, to my surprise as well. I was driving by and they had the open sign on so I pulled in. They had a sign at the front door that said please excuse the mess, work in progress. So I ventured in and they were only about halfway through stocking the store. It had a little bit bigger boat section, but nothing impressive I would compare it to a walmart boat section, if that big. The live bait section was very large. I think when they finish putting it together it will be nice.
