Default I'm new

1st trip to the Bahama'a I am in the planning stages of my 1st Bahama's trip. Going from Stuart or West Palm Beach to the West End/Freeport.
I will email you..

Also considering Ft. Lauderdale or Miami to Bimini.
I cancelled this trip 2 times due to weather ( it was September ).
I have a single screw, low hours, 2000 24' Monterey Cruiser powerboat, 25 kt cruise speed.
I plan on having an EPIRB, life raft, and spare parts ( fuel pump, igition module, cap/rotor ). Also may have an outboard motor as a back up.
I have a fair amout of boating experiance, mostly in the Great Lakes area, and FL intercoastal.
My planned dates are May 20 - 24th ( due to work vacation dates ), give or take a few days, based on weather.

I am looking for any ideas or advice ( in addition to whats already here, great post!!). I REALLY would like to find another boat or 2 to cross there and back with.

Any ideas on how to find other boats to cross with would be very helpful.

Thx in advance for any advice.
If you prefer, you can email me directly at: je.br63@yahoo.com

Check out these links for info regards Customs etc. -- http://www.bahamas.com/bahamas/proce...ring-bahamas-1 -- http://www.bahamas.com/vacation-plan...ms-immigration

and this site for US Customs -- http://www.bahamas.com/bahamas/proce...rning-us-ports

Get yourself and ALL passengers a Local Boaters Option Card--check this site -- http://www.allatsea.net/article/Febr..._Boater_Option

Download Bahamian Customs forms and have completed ahead of time -- http://www.bahamas.com/sites/default..._Clearance.pdf

Have cash for Bahamian Customs Fee's and to tip dockmasters to "insure" your boat and property aren't molested while you're tied up at marinas. (Beer cigarettes and Soda pop are also good in kind trading currency).

Get a copy of some of pubs at
http://www.explorercharts.com/ and fuel prices here -- http://explorercharts.com /index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&It emid=53check

You may wnat to leave from Harnortown Marine in Dania -- http://www.harbourtownemarina.net/ -- great security, easy launch and parking

Woke up early and went a little crazy with the hints but also needed them for couple of boats going in our group so here ya are !!

I plan on leaving June 2 to return on the 5th with the Bahamian boating fling out of the Bahia mar marina in ft lauderdale. It's my first trip as well so I won5 be going alone as I only have a single screw. Captains meeting is on June 1st and if weather is a go then we should be leaving at sunrise.

I'll share info on the trip when i return. Check out the bahamas boating fling links from previous posts.........that's how I got registered.

My plans may have changed a little. I am interested in going with your group on those dates to Bimini. Where are you parking your truck and trailer? Have you been before? Would you recomend West End or Bimini? This will probably be the only trip I'll ever do to the Bahama's (unless I REALLY enjoy it ). Thanks it advance. email je.br66@yahoo.com

Guarantee it won't be your last trip across. Go once and you will be hooked. It is an adventure that you can't get from weekend boating.

First timers I would suggest Bimini. It has alot of options for fishing, snorkeling, beaching the boat on a deserted island (sort of) and a good taste of island life.

It is an easy trip to make and will give you confidence to venture further in future trips.

West End, in my opinion, is a stopping off point for the Abacos. It is a good destination for fishing but does lack some of the opportunities you will find in Bimini and in the Abacos.

Harbor Towne in Dania offers a great facility to securely park your truck and trailer.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Jeff...it's my first trip and the group is only going as far as Bimini which is as far as I'm willing to go for now. Once you register with the bahamas boating fling, you'll receive additional info via email about the trip, meeting times, pre requisites etc. How big is your boat? A 22 is the minimum length in order to signup with that group. In regards to parking, that will be harbor town marina ($8/day) vs the $30 at the marina over by Bahia mar.

Check it out and let me know what your final plans will be. Once again, captains meeting on June 1 and hopefully we depart at sunrise on June 2 out of the bahia mar marina and hotel to sweet Bimini .

Nope......I was one of five boats that had to turn around shortly after we departed port Everglades inlet on the morning of 6/2 due to 4-5 footers (or at least they felt that way) .Plan b for me was to head to south beach, check in to a hotel, get a slip and then spend a few days exploring the various islands in key biscayne. We spent most of our time at boca Chica in the days. We still had just as much fun and safe trip.

Plan on trying again in late august with a few of the other guys who have posted on here so we will see how the weather holds up then.

I'm heading back over August 25-28.

Agree about the north wind. It seems that even the slightest breeze from the north kicks up the stream very quick. For me it seems like every time I go over I get sloppy conditions. I haven't had a glass smooth crossing in years.

Nice going for having a Plan B and I bet it was just as much fun as you said.

I have friends who left out of West Palm last year in a 34 Venture. They buddied with their ex navy seal neighbor and his boat. My friend had zero experience and a wife and his five kids aboard. Seas were 7-9's! Took them eight hours to make the crossing. Family now hates boating. Gee, I wonder why.

Twin engines here but will be happy to keep an eye on you as we usually cruise at 25-30 weather permitting. Departure will be Aug 25th from Port Everglades.

Guys keep in mind when you buddy boat there needs to be an understanding in the event someone breaks down. When the boats have more than one engine its not an issue because the broken down boat can make it back on one engine.

But if you buddy with a single engine boat and that boat breaks down you can't leave them out there. Your trip will be delayed or lost depending on the situation. At the very least you will need to tow them to the nearest safe harbor or wait with them until a tow service reaches them or at least has an ETA and radio contact with the tow service..

Scarab Chris is right it get riskier with one engine, just never know when an engine is going to fail,
