Default Scuba Lesson (Keys)

My wife, son and I plan to head to the keys in April for 4-5 days. I'm looking for a place to take scuba lesson from a place in the Key Largo area. Looking for recommendations.

Thanks

John Pennenkamp State Park on Key Largo offers classes.
I was told that I could possibly do it all in three days if I pushed it.
I suppose I would have to get the books and study beforehand though.

The park is located on the left as you head down, not far (a mile?) from the turn onto the Key.
Big brown sign.

Here's what I'd do...

Take your basic open water (BOW) classes up in PA, going through a local dive shop that you can develop a relationship with. You can do your classroom and pool sessions there without pressure.

Once you complete the classroom and pool time, the local dive shop will do a "referral" to a shop in Key Largo that uses the same POI (Program of Instruction); PADI, NAUI, SSI, ... that way, when you show up in the Keys, you're already somewhat familar with terminology and equipment and then focus on "the fun stuff" while your in the Keys. In the Keys, you just do your "check out" dives and don't have to worry about using all your vacation in the classroom.

I would recommend you consider bringing dive gear with you. Keys dive shops are notorius for crappy equipment -- they get a lot of use and don't always get the service/maintenance they should. If you're flying down and baggage is going to cost -- you may have to limit your self. Diving with equipment you are familar with is half the battle.

Prop Blast is right on with advice. Take a local course and get a referral to a Keys shop for the check dive. I did the same thing years ago - took course in Atlanta and check dive in Caymans, Several years later we gave my son diving lessons for Christmas. He took course here and check dive in Keys. It is better to get the class & pool work completed so you can enjoy more of your trip.

Also, i assume you are talking about a full certification and not just a resort course. A resort course will allow you to make a few shallow dives with an instructor while you are there. Most seem to be just a few hours in the pool and then off to the dive boat.
