Planning a trip to the Florida Keys for February school vacation and was looking for some recommendations on lodging. It’s for the family (wife, 13 yr. old son, 15 yr. old daughter) and I’d like something that’s very nice so the whole family can enjoy the beach, hanging at the resort, etc. And of course, I can get in some fishing. Looking at Hawks Key, and the Moorings in Islamorada. Any recommendations?
Both places you mentioned are nice; a little pricey, but nice and will meet your needs.
One other place to check out is Cheeca Lodge on Islamorada. The main facility had a nast fire early this year and they've been closes while rebuilding. The are planning a December reopening.
Cheeca was a nice place and I'm sure it'll be rebuilt and modernized during the rebuild.
All good recommendations. Key West will give you more to do if the winds are too strong for boating. February is the busiest time in the Keys -- all the snowbirds are here. If you don't make reservations SOON you may not get what you want -- and expect to pay $200/night and up for those nice places. Also, the beaches in the Keys are not like Miami, Naples, Daytona -- there is not much sand and no real waves.

I have stayed at Hawks before and it was nice. Typical resort in that they have everything you might want onsite. Fishing, snorkeling, a little beach area, resturants, etc. All that said, you are in Islamorada... All there is to do is Fish, dive, drink, eat, and sleep.
I would still recommend it and drive to KW for a day or two. Since you have the kids it isn't like you are going to be doing the Duval crawl.

Once you're in the Keys, you'll need some things to do. Since you're from MA; I'll help out (I left there in '79).
1. Take the family to Robbies Marina on Lower Matacumbe Key. It's the first thing on the right as you go over the bridge from Upper Matacumbe (Islamorada). The family will love feeding the Tarpon there by hand!!
2. Have dinner one night at Lazy Days Resturant on Upper Matacumbe. Great view and food. It gets crowded though.
3. Have lunch at 7 Mile Grill on Marathon -- just before you get on the 7 Mile Bridge.
4. If you don't stay at Key West, make the time to drive down for a late afternoon and evening. Visit Mallory Square at sunset, walk the town for a bit and have some dinner.
Lazy Days conch app-YEAH Baby! Lupe's been spending more time in the front of the house lately, so say hi to him. A real good guy with a great business! Will be back down in 2 weeks...
