Went out with Capt Terry on Sunday. While the sun was out and temp was perfect, the bite wasn't on fire and I was able to watch how a professional guide turns an off bite into a memorable experience for his clients.
We started out off the beach trying to catch some white bait. The surf was rough and the wind was up a bit, so after an adventurous attempt to get at bait that was all the way up on the beach in the wash, we decided to try something different. Thanks to Terry for even letting me try. I asked if I could throw the cast net a few times which was really the only reason we were out there.
We ducked back into the bay, got bait and were on fish within minutes. Terry warmed us up on some ladyfish, which we had never caught before, pretty cool little fighters. After a couple ladies each, we moved slightly to another of his "spots" and my brother hooked into a nice slot redfish. The first eater.
The rest of the day included specks, snapper, and some others. We saw rays, sharks, and a manattee.
The tides, wind and solunar table weren't exactly promising, but Capt Terry took us all over the place to put us on fish. He didn't hesitate to move if we weren't on fish within a few minutes. Sometimes the action was hot, but the specks were small or we couldn't get past all the ladyfish, so he would lift the powerpole and run to his next honey hole. He was very proactive in keeping rods rigged and baited, but let us try our own techniques and would give advice on casting location and presentation. He is, without a doubt, very knowledgeable and seemed to know most of the people we ran into throughout the day.
We've all been on charters with a Captain who was more of a taxi driver/first mate and all you do is winch in a fish after its hooked. Capt Terry is not that guy. I learned a lot and he kept us out longer than we expected. All in all, a great experience. The knowledge I gained was better than any multi-species limit. Thanks Capt. Terry!
